Dempsey was incredible in his rise to the top prior to his winning the title. Carl Morris and Fred Fulton were two of the best heavyweights of the era, both 6'4"+ and Dempsey knocked them out in under 30 seconds each. I believe that Fulton was the #1 heavyweight in the world when Dempsey KO'ed him in 18 seconds. I don't need to remind anyone of the demolition job he did on Willard, who absorbed Jack Johnson's (who was past his prime but still a powerful and very skilled puncher as well as a heavy man) best punches while hardly taking a backward step. Willard had never been knocked down in his life until Dempsey, and it wasn't because of a great defense: his chin was cast iron, and Dempsey cracked it.

He was the Mike Tyson of his era, if Tyson only had a champion's heart. The only thing Dempsey lacked was a great defense. In all other areas he was top notch. Offensively he was perhaps the perfect fighter, who was always set to strike with full bodyweight behind his punches at every range. He possessed great balance and leverage and was just as lethal six inches away as he was at long range. Unlike Tyson, Jack knew how to handle himself in a clinch and got the best of those situations. Tying Dempsey up or even moving towards him for any reason was rarely a good idea. He didn't mind fighting dirty because he knew he would get away with it ("They'll only warn you thefirst time" he was known to say). He was a guy who came from nothing and would do anything to win and get ahead in boxing. He fought with the intent to kill.

In my estimation he was one of the greatest pound for pound hitters the sport has seen. Round 1 of Dempsey-Willard is IMO the most impressive display of P4P punching power in recorded ring history because there you actually see a much smaller man annhilate a massive Lennox Lewis size guy who had a reputation for having an iron chin. This isn't a Thomas Hearns where you might speculate that he could probably KO a light heavyweight if he could get in a hit first; this was a 180 pounds man climbing into the ring with a world champion 65 pounds heavier than himself and actually tearing the larger man a new *******. I'll take Dempsey over Julian Jackson, who only knocked out men his own size, as a better P4P hitter seeing as Dempsey gave us physical proof of his ability to hurt larger men. The only comparable giant killers were Sam Langford and Joe Louis.

Jack Dempsey is without a doubt a top ten heavyweight. I have him at the bottom for his less than impressive title defense record, but make no mistake that in terms of talent and fighting ability he was a top fiver. Physically and psychologically, he ranks among the most gifted heavyweights.

Patterson and Moore over Dempsey at heavyweight? That is obscene. The forum as a whole is incredibly biased against Dempsey.

i have dempsey at #11, cause he fought in the 20s, and technology and nutrition make fighters better over time, but he probably beat any guy his size who ever fought.

            Archie Moore ?

He has not one major victory at heavyweight, not one.

He's one of the greatest fighters of all time, but he was just not a heavyweight.

Here is the list again in no particular order.
              George Foreman.
              Ali
A prime Bowe (sure his prime didn't last long but i am giving you the best fighters not the fighters who were great for along time or fighters who the media kiss up too)
              Lennox Lewis
Ron Lyle (For those who believed Ali was past his prime when he 30 then the same goes for Lyle.He turned pro when he was about 28 so by the time he fought Ali,Foreman,Shavers,Young ect he was already in his 30's.And if he had the power to knock down a prime Foreman..Something Holyfield Morrison and all of the other top level fightes Foreman fought when he was 40 plus then you know he would have little trouble knocking out a guy like Joe Louis who again avoided every black fighter until the end of his career and neither of the 2 blacks he fought were over 190 and he lost to both of them.

Actually you really can't be a true boxing fan and have anybody else up here.Holmes neveer beat anybody worth mentioning besides robbing a past his prime Norton and Ali.Holyfield was good but again who did he really beat?He stuggled to beat Foreman and Holmes when they were over 40 he got a gift win over Bowe and then he beat Tyson like that proves something.4 other guys have knocked out Tyson so no big deal.Marciano is only a heavyweight in the eyes of racist white guys.180 pounds=not a heavweight but a cruiserweight or a light heavyweight.Joe Louis was great only in the eyes of white guys who feel sorry for blacks or racist black guys.Building up a record fighting nobodys and ducking black fighters who weren't even that good anyway doesn't make you great.
To be great you need to fight and beat other greats while they are still in their primes. You have to have a great chin. You can't get knocked out 5 times like Tyson has 4 by guys who weren't really big punchers or not really that good of a boxer. You had to have good attributes.Like Ali had a great jab and so did Foreman.Foreman was great a cutting off the ring.Ali was great at pulling away and avoiding most big punches.
You have to be able to punch. You don't have to have one punch ko power but you have to be able to stop other good fighters.Ali did Foreman did Lewis did.
Learn from me kiddies. Most of you have no clue what you are talking about. You get a fighter and you worship him like he is god.You believe he is great when reality he isn't.I am not biased. If you read what i typed before i am not a fan of Ali or Lewis but i know they were great.
Infact most of you are like this. Most of you aren't really that biased.Just the gay Tyson fans and the racits Marciano fans. Most of you other kids are cool.
i do believe marciano was overrated, but he is not as bad as you say he is. he did have great punching power for his size and he did manage to win all his fights, he had to have been doing something right. he would in fact beat alot of hw's today, despite the weight difference.

                1. Joe Louis
                2. Muhammad Ali
                3. Larry Holmes
                4. Mike Tyson
                5. George Foreman
                6. Joe Frazier
                7. Gene Tunney
                8. Sonny Liston
                9. Jack Dempsey
                10. Rocky Marciano

In terms of skill you'd have Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson are your three best.

In terms of speed you'd have Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis or Mike Tyson.

But, that list is my top 10 based on everything.

                      Another overrated heavyweight.

Biggest wins, in the division, are over a faded & rusty Dempsey.

Just because you were great in other divisions, doen't make you automatically so in others you happened to compete in.

Thomas Hearns.....isn't gonna go down as a cruiserweight great.
