Lucas is a terrific boxer puncher

while i think he's got some boxing skills, and does work in the subtleties of the game, i wouldn't classify him as a boxer / puncher. certainly not a terrific one, anyway. a great boxer puncher can and does fight moving laterally and away from contact. he'll create offense by boxing. ray leonard was a boxer puncher, so was tommy hearns. they could fight moving forward or back, rarely doing one or the other for the entirety of the fight. matthysse is usually coming forward and trying to get his opponent to throw with him by shrinking / cutting off the ring. he's more rounded than he might be portrayed, but i'd still describe him as an aggressor, who generates offense off of his aggression.

his successes with judah and alexander didn't come from outboxing them. they came when he landed his gas. he had alexander hurt and on the ropes after pressuring him and throwing that right hand to the chest. he almost stopped him. that was a robbery. the judah fight was closer, imo, but i thought matthysse took it because he was the more effective puncher, even if judah's boxing skills gave him some issues.

he's a boxer puncher he's certainly got an accent on the puncher part. if i had to group him into a category i'd call him a pressure fighter with ample power. he's not that completely, but it's a more appropriate classification than boxer / puncher, IMO.

Well one of us watched the fight and judged the winner on who landed better punches and the other one had a winner based on footwork and air jabs

He literally just did that with Kendall Holt. Footwork, head movement, good jab, and efficient punching.
No he didnt, Holt was having decent success in the beginning when Peterson wasnt pushing the pace and was stopped when Peterson started "coming forward and landing clean hard punches"

I agree with all of this other than you giving the Judah fight to Matthysse.

Cmon you're comparing him to Hearns and Leonard

His success came from him him having a good balance of "boxing skill' and pressure, which is what a boxer puncher is. Despite his haters say, lucas has a very good balance of offense and defense, and is not some face first brawler that he's made out to be

So if a guy has a very hard punch that help him win, he cannot be a boxer puncher? Lucas is a prime example of a boxer puncher

Matthysse is gonna die from inhaling mould from those walls before he even gets in there with Peterson

i don't want to make it appear as if i think matthysse is not a dynamic fighter. i think my post demonstrated that i believe him to be dynamic.

if you want to classify him as a boxer / puncher on those grounds i suppose you can. we have a different definition of a boxer puncher.

i tend to think of a stylist in terms of what he wants to do. matthysse might take a couple/few rounds to get going by using the ring and boxing a bit, but many of the top flight aggressive fighters do that. when he's at his best, which is from the middle of the fight and onward, he's generally pushing an opponent backward and looking to force exchanges and action. he's still using skills and getting out of the way of punches, but he's an aggressor. get to the middle distance with intelligence, work the body, and break a man down. ray leonard and hearns would do that when the occasion called for it. matthysse does it in virtually every fight. that's really not a boxer puncher. that's where his best successes were in the judah fight, even if he did a fine job of boxing early on. later in the fight, when judah had slowed and was having trouble controlling the ring, matthysse was pushing him back, and off of the balls of his feet. i'd say that the early judah rounds were his best exhibition as a "boxer puncher," and even then he did best moving forward later in the fight.

in the alexander fight he wanted to move forward chiefly. usually alexander barks and runs, but he tries to do it in the middle of the ring. he moves in circles. matthysse came forward almost chiefly in that fight, with all of the subtleties that make him an effective pressure fighter. he cut off the ring, worked the body, and broke him down. those right hands to the chest were unreal.
