Comments Thread For: Mares: I Would Only Go Back To 122 For Rigondeaux

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion made a recent appearance on BoxingScene Radio to talk about his stoppage victory over Daniel Ponce De Leon. Over the past few years Mares has gone on a run rarely seen in the sport as he has faced elite competition from 118 pounds to 126 pounds.

I asked Mares if he thought this would be a good time to take a tune up fight or a fight that would be perceived as easier. Mares immediately turned the conversation to his undefeated rival WBC/WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux who scored a big upset when he defeated Nonito Donaire last month. Rigo would get humiliated against Mares! 6-7 rounds max, KO.

I don't know how anyone can dislike Mares. The guy has shown a willingness to fight anyone. Rigo got fans excited earlier this week when he said he'd be willing to do whatever it takes to face Mares, but recently, he flat said he'd refuse to fight him at 126 . I wonder what his response will be now that Mares has indicated he'd be willing to move down. Rigo and his manager need to talk some sense into his jackass promoter, who's the only one standing in the way.

For the sake of humanity, world hunger and the love of boxing... please make this fight happen

Mares is the man and I love his willingness to fight anyone. With that I think Rigo wins but would be rooting for Mares

I disagree that this fight can't get made.

Rigo isn't a cash cow and doesn't have a network contract and I think a Mares fight makes the most money for him and Top Rank. I think Arum would be more than willing to let Rigo take one fight on a GBP card against Mares.

Rigo has no leverage though and can't call the shots so Mares has to be the one to really push forward with it and force Schaefer and Oscar to get Rigo's team a contract.

Styles make fights, so you can never be 100% sure about the outcome.
But even if the critics are right and Rigo boxes circles around Mares, you got to respect the kid for wanting the fight.
Now can Arum give us the fight?

Mares would give a better fight then Nonito gave. Idk if he would win but he wouldn't get embarrassed. Close, competitive fight.
