I don't know if there is another more impressive resume in the past 2 years than Mares. He can brawl, counter punch, box, move forward or backward. I will argue Mares might be the most well rounded fighter in the game today and that's no exaggeration.

I would love to see this fight and I don't think it would be a walk in the park for Rigo.
Only two active fighters I would put above Mares regarding toughest competition lately, and that is Ward and Froch, but he is third in my book

      Abner Mares is a throwback

Not only because of his style, but because of his mentality. He's a student of the sport, trained with Nacho at one point, has talked about utilizing different and effective strategies throughout his entire career for different opponents and has even talked about the importance of improving on areas that he felt he was lacking. He always points this stuff out on his own too.

His whole career has been like this, he's a ****ing focused fighter. He knows what his job is and he embraces it and you can tell he really loves it.

He's the polar opposite of what Victor Ortiz is. I'm only mentioning Ortiz because I followed his career intently early on and I think from a Trainers perspective, I'd say Ortiz is exactly what you don't want a fighter to be. A mindless robot who you have to pay extra attention too because he can't figure things out on his own.

Mares on the other hand is just soo involved in his craft. It's always fun to see a fighter like this emerge.
