I like Mares, really do but Rigo is better, and is already calling him out.
    Rigo will tap that ass.

Guillermo ‘El Chacal’ Rigondeaux is looking forward to defending his WBA and WBO 122lb world titles in September. Rigondeaux is hoping that his promoters Top Rank and Caribe Promotions can make a fight with Golden Boy’s WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares. Golden Boy, according to the Nevada Athletic Commission, paid Mares $350,000 for his victory over Ponce de Leon on the undercard of Mayweather/Guerrero. “It was an easy night’s work beating the 2012 fighter of the year Nonito Donaire on April 13th but beating Mares will be even easier,” said Rigondeaux. “I have already beaten Mares in the Pan American Games by a wide points margin of 17-7 but with the headgear off and these small gloves I will knock him out. However, if he wants to step up to the big time he should take this challenge. I’m sure my promoters can make it financially worthwhile for him and for Golden Boy. Of course, if he simply wants to be an undercard fighter and not rise to this challenge, that is his right but all will know then that he is afraid to fight me.”

Styles make fights. I'm not saying that Rigo won't win this fight, but to say he's clearly better or that he will "tap that ass" is just being blinded by you being a fan of his.

I don't know if there is another more impressive resume in the past 2 years than Mares. He can brawl, counter punch, box, move forward or backward. I will argue Mares might be the most well rounded fighter in the game today and that's no exaggeration.

I would love to see this fight and I don't think it would be a walk in the park for Rigo.

Excellent article. And much of the point of why I'm such a huge fan of Mares. It's soo simple with me. I like fighters that I do not have to defend too much. I don't like to have to sit there and lie to myself and come up with reasons why my guy didn't wanna fight (the threat), or why he ducked so and so. Mares fits the bill perfectly. How many other fighters have we seen in the lower weight classes that actually wants a piece of either Rigo or Donaire??

Mares is a top 5 P4P, I don't see how anyone could deny him that, Perez, Agbeko 2x, Darchinyan, Moreno, PDL...that's fuckin' impressive. I want to see him and Leo Santa Cruz in the near future.

I don't know why everyone who loses blames it on weight and moves up. Like as if they wouldn't get dominated at a higher weight. The best way to reinvent yourself IMO is to study up and train harder and have a rematch.

People say Donaire cleaned out the division and there is no shame moving up. Well the fact is he didn't clear out the division. He should either rematch Rigo and then move up, or admit he is too good and move up. But to say he cleaned out the division and wants to move up because he has trouble making weight is pure bs. A lot of people don't like Donaire because of his attitude and will continue if he states nonsense like this.

I agree. At first I wouldn't put him in the top 5, but then again no one has cleaned out their division like him since Ward and the super six, so you could make a good argument.

(Sorry i was typing this on my cell phone and it came out ******ed. This was @Dominicano Soy regarding Mares as top 5 PVP)

I remember everyone thinking the same thing when Yhonny was one of the kings of the division. They thought the same thing when he went up against Vic.Darch and Abeko. There is nothing flashy about him which is why people count him out. But then again there is nothing flashy with A.Ward, D.Garcia, Bradley and they are considered some of the best in their division.

Is Mares unbeatable? No, but he's not an easy fight. You can't sleep on him and I definitely think he is "capable" of beating anyone.
