And for the less-informed, Abner Mares just moved up to 126lbs. Gary Russell Jr. fights @ 130 and has yet to take on anybody with a pulse. I like Gary, but he's got a lot of work to do--namely start taking better care of his problematic hands.

Mares could outbox Donaire. Mathebula and Vasquez did well and they aren't on his level.

Donaire would hurt Mares. It would be a good fight but Donaire would blast him!

OK I think he has a decent chance, didn't think so 3 months ago so you're ahead of me. He could still get KOed though. I'm just having a hard time understanding the 3m offer. 11 fight Rigo just made twice as much as GBP's main man, p4p Mares going for his 3rd belt.

                  ^^^ This.

Ponce is horrible with his slow push of a left lead . . . no speedball punches at all. Even the post-fight announcer criticised him for only use his lead left. Rigo stops that clown in five rounds - BELIEVE IT!

Mares against Rigondeaux and/or Donaire would be competitive fights, where he has a good chance to win versus either.

Abner has used the Perez, Darchinyan, and Agbeko fights to become a better fighter. Last night, he established himself as a top featherweight by beating a dangerous DPDL.

Aside from his other attributes and boxing ability, Mares put on display an excellent chin, good power at 126, and and ability to adapt his style depending on the opponent. He'd be a problem against whover he faces at 126.
