    The Shoulder Roll!

Why is it that whenever someone uses the shoulder roll nowadays he's automatically trying to be like Floyd? With Broner I think he is trying to be like him but everyone else seems to be "trying to mimic Floyd". Did Floyd invent it or something? Whatever happened to George mutha fuc#king Benton who was The master at it? Or James Toney, Pernell Whitaker, Ezzard Charles, Miguel Canto and all the other fighters who preceded Floyd and were shoulder roll practitioners? The only reason I can come up with people thinking that those who use the shoulder roll are trying to mimic Floyd must be new to the sport. It just irks me to see people credit Floyd with the shoulder roll like he invented it. You guys must be either really young, Floyd nuthuggers or not educated on the history of the sport.

How many fighters are compared to doing the "Floyd" defense? I think Broner got it majorly because he's black. Since I saw Broner the first thing that popped into my head was "James Toney" I didn't really see "Floyd Mayweather."

I've seen some fighters still use the shoulder roll to help them out of sticky situations, the latest fighters I've seen utilize it for a majority of their matches were probably Abril and Terence Crawford.

Exactly who I compared him too. I think hes probably compared to Floyd more because of his obviously love for him & he mimics that face Floyd tends to pull when someone gets through whilst shaking his head.
I feel his style is far more like James Toney though than Floyd.

Because many fans don't educate themselves on actual techniques and history, they just assume boxers that use a style they haven't seen just made it up.

There was a poll, and most of the posters here are in their 20's and don't remember those other guys or didn't even see them.

Such a shame, I'm 18 and I've dug down into watching Sweet Pea, Toney, and a couple rounds of Charles.

Because Floyd uses it so much and mastered it. Name another fighter who uses it as much as Floyd and used it as effectively? None. People relate others to the best, there's no getting away from it.

So, do we re-name the jab "The Klitschko"? Footwork is now called Ali and the Ford Mustang is now the Steve McQueen. Don't think so...

Well anyone who said he invented it is just uneducated about boxing. Of course he didn't. I think it is more that he uses it more effectively than anyone has in recent years, which is 100% true. Fighters like Pernell and Toney used similar styles too but their styles did vary though. Pernell, Toney and Floyd are the best defensive fighters in the last 20 years without a doubt. If you look at statistics though, I believe numerically Floyd is still harder to hit that either of them, just from %'s. Floyd learned it from his daddy though so it runs in the family, even Sugar Ray said Floyd Sr.'s defense was unbelievable. The shoulder roll defense is not impregnable, especially against southpaws. Floyd will have to adjust with Ghost because the roll favors orthodox power shots. Floyd's right glove up high will have to be used more and the roll will still protect him against the right hooks though. People just still need to give credit where it is due, I mean regardless of JMM coming up in weight, Floyd made one of the best, if not the best master boxing technician of the last 10 years look like an amateur in the ring, JMM was hitting air. That speaks volumes of Floyd's abilities.
