He is popular because he has an exciting agressive style. He comes to fight. He never runs or clinches or holds. He goes for the KO and usually gets it. Outside the ring he is good looking with a pleasant personality. He wins his fights. He is a red headed Mexican and that makes him unique and adds to his popularity. Most of Mexico's best fighters have been in the lower weight classes but Canelo and Chavez Jr. are two larger guys that are exciting and successful.

how he got so popular? he done won every fight on his record. got some great exposure on undercards. fought well known fighters. been managed not too carefully but correctly. remember when cotto chubby lightweight brother rocked canelo? canelo mgnmt must all have sht they pants some. but canelo won that one too. one more thing, canelo is hittable and dont have one shot power. these are very important things too. u might not think of it consciously but might u be a bit reluctant to wannna see a fight that might only last 25 seconds? and u know the general public is sadistic enough to want to see a fighter who takes hits instead of a fighter who never gets hit. anyway, he just passed his biggest test to date and imo has earned his shot a the bigs
