A large part does have to do with his look though, even though there's millions of light skinned Mexicans, people still look at him and say "what? a red haired Mexican that boxes?" This is also fueled by his moniker Canelo, which is very catchy and creative, and even non Spanish speaking fans of address him as that.

Think about this; Saul Alvarez has brown skin and dark hair but he's the exact same fighter/person, is he still as popular?

Being Mexican and the Look Helps, he has a different look from most Mexican fighters, read hair, pale skin...plus a brilliant job by Oscar De La Hoya who been hyping the guy up for a long time

Only other fighter Oscar put this much effort into promoting was Victor Ortiz and Victor was on his way to stardom but seems extremely uncomfortable in the spotlight especially during the build up of the Mayweather fight when he started acting WEIRD!

hes got good skills. but hes not a phenom or prodigy the way guys like oscar, floyd, roy, sugar ray, benitez were. he does have the makings of the superstar tho. but is he good enough to sustain it? he has a long way to go.
