If the Amateurs dont mean anything then someone explain this to me

styles make fights, and donaire's got a sh#T style for the amateurs. when he was there he fought like a pro.
the amateurs and the pros are not the same. the greats in one sport are very different from the other.Comment

Ok bro. I guess my stepdad and family did time cause they just felt like it. This is a boxing forum so I'm not gonna get into this.Originally posted by frosty-gQuote:

I think Amateur greatness Doesn't alwasys completely mean that youre going to be a great pro but it sure as **** gives you a great edge if you have other atributes to go along with it you can dominate Remember Ward Roy jones JR and Floyd Mayweather all olympic medalists is not like it's a Cuban thing.Comment

What you just said means nothing, many people don't compete in any sport doest mean they can't state the obvious. Being successful in the amateur doest guarantee you will be successful in the pros and most of the time these fighters suck monkey balls in the pros. It just so happens that rigo is one of the few that was good.
Now I would say rigo is diffrent then most because he has 2gold medals which in recent times having a gold medal means you would be successful in the pros 9 times out of ten but being successful in the amateurs means nothing.Comment

well you got into it by making comments that aren't correct, then getting pulled up on it.
as an individual you aren't allowed to slaughter a cow in Cuba and can be arrested for being involved in that, and having a sizeable supply of beef stashed away is more than likely good evidence that you've been involved in illegally slaughtering a cow, which would have belonged to the state anyway, so doubly illegal for stealing it.
beef is absolutely not illegal in Cuba but it is in short supply, hence the over the top controls on cows. i've eaten beef there, bought and cooked it myself (not just talking restaurants) in shops that anyone can go into. it's fairly scarce and expensive but certainly not illegal. there is the possibility to obtain beef por la izquierda, and this will maybe have come from an illegal source and therefore being involved in that is surprise surprise illegal. like stealing, chopping up and selling a cow would be in probably every country of the world.
you think your stepdad and family risked (and actually went) going to prison so that they could have a steak sandwich, or is it more likely they got nabbed for the trade aspect of it?Comment

Agree with this one. Couldn't have said it any better.I think Amateur greatness Doesn't alwasys completely mean that youre going to be a great pro but it sure as **** gives you a great edge if you have other atributes to go along with it you can dominate Remember Ward Roy jones JR and Floyd Mayweather all olympic medalists is not like it's a Cuban thing.Comment

I don't think any sane person would say that it doesn't mean anything ( I hope), but likewise no one would claim that it means everything. What he has done is impressive and certainly helped to hone his skill, and it seems like it translates nicely into professional boxing.

I think some fighters you can tell, altho they had great success in the amateurs, they won't amount to anything in the pros. Like the example I used earlier, Zou Shiming.
What's the one dude that signed with GB and made the Olympic team 3 times but never made it past the first round? Even tho he didn't get gold he "had great success in the amateurs" but I don't think he will go very far either.
Know what I mean?
