  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer Explains The Peterson-Matthysse Catch-Weight

In of the more anticipated fights in the first half of 2013, IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16KOs) will face WBC interim-champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31KOs) on May 18th in a Showtime televised headliner from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Earlier this week, the fight had an interesting twist when Golden Boy Promotions announced that Peterson-Matthysse would held at a catch-weight of 141-pounds - which means neither boxer will be risking their title in the contest.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer explained the situation to BoxingScene.com. While both fighters were more than willing to unify their belts, there were some issues with getting both sanctioning bodies on board. [Click Here To Read More]

Meh, they should just have a gentleman's agreement and a handshake to make 140, off the record.

I agree with Schaffer when he says the fans and media try to have it both ways. I also agree with him that we still rather have it for the belts though.....lol

So it really wasn't anyone's fault or choice. What is wrong with boxing when unifying titles is frowned upon?

Matthysse wants to keep his mandatory position to Danny Garcia.

Its not really unifying a title. It's only an interim. I could see this from IBF's position and would probably rule the same way.

Of course the WBC says yes, they get a new world champ that they can pit against their real WBC champ, Garcia and I don't know. Hell, why is there an interim titlist anyways, Garcia is active.
