Comments Thread For: David Price's Trainer: He Tried To Finish Tony Too Early

David Price's trainer admits the heavyweight has learned important lessons from his shock knockout defeat against Tony Thompson.

Price's unbeaten record was shattered in February when he was dramatically halted by Thompson in the second round, but the Liverpudlian will get the chance to avenge this loss in a rematch on July 6.

Trainer Franny Smith believes his fighter tried to finish off Thompson too quickly after a string of early wins and expects him to stick to a gameplan in the return bout.

"You seen what happened, it was obviously a mistake. He went for him too much I think early on," Smith told Ringside Toe 2 Toe podcast.

"Tony Thompson's a wily old cat isn't he, so he needed to be a bit more patient, just apply the pressure gradually. Just keep chipping away at him which is what we had planned to do. [Click Here To Read More]

blah blah blah, it's very likely a more confident Tony will whack him again in the rematch.

David's trainer wasn't a big help during that fight. Between the 1st and 2nd round, he says to Price "This guy (Thompson) has nothing". Price got knocked out 2 minutes later.

You should never get your fighter to underestimate his opponent.

There isn't anything wrong with bringin the heat early,
he just needs to learn some head movement and keep the
gloves up. What they dont want to admit this?

there is lots of talk of what he should do. one thing we know is price can be knocked out by an average puncher. what we don't know is if price can go rounds. will he gas in the later rounds? too many unanswered questions about the guy. we know he can destroy journeymen & C level fighters but he is 0-1 vs contenders. is he the next wlad klitschko or chazz witherspoon?

Its a fine line between attack and defence but I thought price likes to be agressive and the real test is can he follow a plan for a full fight if it goes that long
