Rigondeaux, a decorated amateur who won two Olympic gold medals for Cuba, is a skilled counter-puncher, but he insists he can also be the aggressor in a boxing match.
“In this fight, I will try to engage more than I have in the past,” said Rigondeaux, as quoted by Philboxing. “I want to give the fans what they want to see.”
“Nonito is an aggressive boxer, and I will be coming for him. I expect the same from Nonito,” he added. “He is a great boxer and a great technician.”
Both combatants agree that their bout on Saturday will provide “a lot of fireworks for fight fans.”
“It may be a chess match. We are both defensive because we can see the punches coming, but when it comes down to the fight, we are both aggressive and offensive guys,” Donaire said.
Rigondeaux, who will be fighting as a professional for only the 12th time, is excited to test his skills against Donaire, who he feels is currently the best at the super bantamweight division.
“I have great respect for Nonito. His record speaks for itself and what he has done as a professional boxer,” he said. “Right now, Nonito is the best and on April 13 I am going to give it my all.”
“I believe I belong at this level, and if I am going to be the best, I believe you’ve got to beat the best,” he added.
The upcoming bout is the most important of his career, said Rigondeaux.
“This fight will determine the best in the 122-pound weight class,” he said. “Nonito is a great tactician and has enormous power, so I think it’s going to be an excellent fight.”
