  • Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. vs. Barker or Vera in Play For San Antonio

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez will likely return in San Antonio, Texas on either June 15 or June 22 at the AT&T Center, according to veteran reporter John Whistler.

Lester Bedford, a marketer of sporting events who frequently works with Top Rank, told Whistler “every conversation I've had with them indicate it's going to be San Antonio. We've got the venue reserved for both dates."

So he's fought Rubio, Lee, Martinez, and now Barker or Vera.

Outside of the fact that he's probably not being tested in Texas, these are good fighters. I guess it's time to start giving Chavez a little bit of respect.

    Just a little.

Yeah, I was very anti-Chavez Jr for quite some time too, and deservingly so. After the Andy Lee fwin, I finally gave him some props and upgraded him to contender status ha ha. I still feel he has been spoon-fed throughout his career, is a proven cheater, ducked Martinez forever and was wrongfully given Sergio's WBC belt. Those are just the obvious facts. I'm not a fan of him largely due to his poor work ethic. I also think he has an unfair advantage over most of his opponents because he's naturally a light heavy-cruiserweight. He makes the weight though, so I can't knock him for that (even though he's been caught cheating to do it). That being said, the kid has KO power in both hands and one hell of a chin. He's very exciting to watch and I look forward to him possibly fighting the likes of GGG, Quillen and eventually the 168lbers.

Every word of your post is the truth. Given that his upcoming fight is at a catchweight, I'm wondering how much longer he'll be at 160lbs. 168 won't be a walk in the park for him.

I agree but even at 168, he'll naturally be bigger than a lot of those guys too. His chin and KO power will be his saving grace in that division. So many lucrative fights ahead for the kid. Really wish Pavlik hadn't retired, because a Pavlik/Chavez fight would have been epic!

Only one of those listed was/is Top 10 at 160.

And? They're still all good fighters.

Chavez Jr used to be a side show attraction. The fact that he can beat anyone even in the top 100 now is an absolute miracle. I still don't understand how they were able to get him to beat John Duddy.

Nice, I sure hope GB and TR start bringing more fights to San Antonio, AT&T center, Alamodome, or OLLU doesn't matter!
