Comments Thread For: Zeljko Mavrovic To Return on 4/27 After 15 Year Layoff?

According to several sources, former European champion Zeljko Mavrovic (27-1, 22 KOs) of Croatia is actually in full training camp in Spain for a ring return. The 43-year-old has not fought since suffering the only loss of his pro career, when he dropped a tough twelve round decision to then WBC champion Lennox Lewis in 1998. International reporters are stating that Mavrovic will return on April 27th in Hamburg, with the rumored opponent being Enad Licina (22-4, 12 KOs) of Serbia - which is going to play on the hostile relationship between their respective countries.

Enad Licina is an ethnic Bosniak from the Sandzak region of Serbia which is former Bosnian land. Most people from that region don't view themselves as Serbian and that includes Enad so no the serb-croat hostility you speak of would not exist between the 2 if they were to meet.

if i remember correctedly he trained for a couple of years before the lennox fight. from my understanding he was a vegetarian who usually weighed 175lbs but bulked up to over 200 for that fight. i remember lennox didn't train too hard & hit mavrovic with everything but the kitchen sink but couldn't knock him out. one of those mandatories a guy doesn't want to fight. he was european champion for a few years i believe & that is how he got his ranking & the mandatory position.
