If both HBO and Showtime dropped their Boxing programs, both would still be on the air and still have about the same amount of subscribers. Boxing doesn't make up for even 15% of their total viewing considering Boxing is only aired at least once or twice a month on either network. Check the ratings for Game of Thrones or Dexter in relation.
Who needs who more? Golden Boy Promotions or HBO?

But how easy is it to break contract, though. I mean, you can do it but I'm sure huge penalties will come with it.in that case, GBP is still the loser. the only reason why GBP signed all that talent was the promise of getting on HBO and collecting that HBO welfare check and dates. some of their boxers might start jumping ship to get back on HBO. Schaefer knows this, that's why he was pissed that HBO was going behind GBP backs to talk to managers and boxers under the GBP banner.
as for GBP's future stars... the ginger wants Floyd, but if GBP can't deliver him, the ginger might jump ship. Broner will go wherever the money is, I'm mean if he's licking stripper puss_y you know he ain't too particular about where his money is coming from either.Comment

No lie, I always wanted to fight on HBO and have Larry Merchant criticize me. Yeah, I'm weird.Short run HBO hurts more and long run GBP hurts more~
In the short run HBO needs quality fighters, if you don't have most of the best guys fighting on your network hard to say you are the face of boxing. It will take HBO a good amount of time and money to cultivate the talent needed to replace the stable of talent GBP has. HBO might not have been getting the best GBP fights but if they make better offers is GBP going to not hook them up~. It shows real weakness also on the leadership at HBO that it had to come to this and they are throwing in the towel on competing with Showtime for GBP talent~
Long run HBO is bigger and has deeper pockets than GBP plus GBP needs more outlets to showcase their talent. Also some talent will want to fight on HBO as that was their dream, short term they can keep their guys happy but over the long haul not being able to work with HBO will be a drag on attracting new talent, this could be minor or major depending on what GBP is able to work out with other outlets outside Showtime.Comment

Once again, I'm talking about their boxing programs. The rest of the stuff you mentioned is stating the obvious. If both HBO and Showtime dropped their Boxing programs, both would still be on the air and still have about the same amount of subscribers. Other than those two, as far as cash cows go all I can think of is Chavez Jr.
Showtime has Mayweather, Canelo, Broner, Cotto. Guys who are getting built up like Garcia, Khan. And then there's Hopkins.Comment

It's like this, HBO has the primo production and the "convincing" announcing staff so they can pretty much have any decent boxer on there and talk them into being the next Hagler or Hearns. Showtime has a more down to earth, realistic approach and I think their more honest opinion and less flashy approach will not mesh well with Schaefer and DLH's idea of fight promotion. HBO and TR know this but Schaefer thinks he is still running a Swiss bank or something.
It will go down like this, the showtime squad rips on a GBP fighter or two and they starting trying to flex. The CBS bigwigs get complaints from the Showtime staff about the muscle attempts and they come down on the Boxing head asking why he isn't doing anything about it. It comes out later that he is released of his position and GBP is kicked off of Showtime. DLH splits with Schaefer and tries to reunite with HBO playing the old "remember all I did for you game"Comment

Very good scenario, very good. But one cable company dumping them and Oscar practically begging to come back? Not likely... I think HBO is hurting from this behind the scenes. It's like this, HBO has the primo production and the "convincing" announcing staff so they can pretty much have any decent boxer on there and talk them into being the next Hagler or Hearns. The large majority of boxing viewers are casual. HBO with the broader viewing base could build new stars, recycle old ones, or whatever, and still be a leg up over showtime. Just as a quick example, HBO could build crawford up as a star. He's talented, why not.
These other stars, gone over to a lesser network, will take a hit. Plus a bunch of gbp fighters will be vying for dates on only one network. Shoot I think even MW will sell less ppv's over on showtime.
The only thing HBO is losing to Showtime is boxing purists.. But they are few and far between. Most are casual and will take most anything HBO feeds them and not know any better.Comment
