Comments Thread For: Price Was Advised By Lennox To Face Thompson Again

DAVID PRICE is convinced he is still on course to become world heavyweight champion after taking advice from Lennox Lewis.

Price has been given a swift rematch with American Tony Thompson, who claimed a shock second-round win over the Scouser last month.

They meet again at the same venue, Liverpool’s Echo Arena, on July 6, with Price determined to gain revenge.

And he has been given a boost by Lewis, the most recent undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

Price, 30, said: “I could have taken on opponents of a lower standard, but I wanted to get right back, and Lennox agreed with me.

I'm glad Price is taking the rematch so soon. Least the kid's got some balls.

To be fair his chin still hasn't been tested. Thompson never really cracked his chin, he caught him on the ear if I remember correctly.

Be interesting to see how Price approaches this fight.

Are you really differentiating the chin and ear? Yes, the mechanics are different but when a guy can't take a punch he can't take a punch. Getting into the semantics is pointless.

I think this fight is a big mistake. If he lost again, in the same way, his career would be over. Fight someone else first.

Great to see Price taking the rematch; it's a risky, but a ballsy decision from Team Price.

You got a point - he's putting all of his eggs in one basket. Which is why it could be a very intriguing second affair. What will Price do different?

I'm going to have to agree. When people say "chin" in boxing it means ability to take a punch on the head. Whether the punch hits the actual chin or not is not really the point.

                  Neuroscience of KO

Indeed, the classical KO results from a hook to the chin that causes extreme cranial rotation, whereby the brain rotates slower than the skull and impacts against the boney inter-cranial structures. This results in nerve damage and unconsciousness. It is not very uncommon for boxers to get up after a few seconds and continue to fight. There are even cases of them coming back to win.
But Price was hit on the temporal lobe (i.e. near the ear), and although some brain rotation/displacement may have occurred, he was never unconscious. In this case, a sensory overload and severe disruption of Price’s equilibrium was caused by Thompson’s short, snapping punch just behind his ear, which impacted his vestibular system in the inner ear. It is amazing and courageous that that Price even got up, but he was in no condition to fight.
In the rematch Price’s psychological and emotional state will be the key. If he gets angry and goes for revenge, he may get caught again by a Thompson counter punch. If he tries to box him, he may get out boxed by the wily veteran. He needs to make it a physical fight and lean on Thompson.
I would guess a UD for Price. But with some luck and discipline he could achieve a late round KO.

Well then, I hope Lewis plans on paying Price for the rest of his career after Thompson KO's him again his career is done.
