Nonito Donaire is P4P the #1 Fighter In Boxing

On The Road to Donaire-Rigondeaux, Max Kellerman asked the questions, if Donaire was a natural 168 pounder, who would win him or Ward and if he was a natural 147 pounder, who would win him or Mayweather? My answer to both those questions is that Donaire would beat both those guys if he was the same natural weight as them. Now if you want to go the route of the best fighter regardless of P4P status, then that award would go to Wladimir Klitschko. We are talking P4P however and that is why Donaire is P4P #1 on my list. He will have a chance to prove himself of that #1 ranking when he takes on Guillermo "El Chacal" Rigondeaux who in his own right is a P4P boxing star and self proclaims himself as the greatest boxer in history.

Ward and Mayweather remain easily the top 2, in whatever order you prefer. They are simply FAR more skilled, well rounded and capable of many more things. Donaire is good, but he's got work to do before even getting above Martinez and Marquez, let alone the two clear best P4P fighters.

Donaire beats Ward? Donaire beats Mayweather? If Donaire gets frustrated and outboxed by Mathebula what do you think Ward would do to him with his tactics? Can Donaire even fight on the inside? My guess is no. What do you think Floyd would do when Donaire is loading up on his left hook? Floyd is great anticipating his opponents punches. What do you think he would do to a guy who telegraphs his left hook?

      Stop it.

Ward is good but in order for him to get to #1 he needs to fight Martinez, Golovkin or Chavez. Don't get me started on Mayweather, he has only fought like 5 times in the past 6 years and most of them against washed up opponents and Pacquiao leftovers.

Who had a better year or harder resume than Donaire in 2012? Put in work? You can argue he's put in the most work.

I would still have Floyd and Ward as #1 and #2 but Donaire is up there.

Ward has already easily beat Froch, Kessler and Dawson....that is 3 elite, pound-for-pound level fighters. It's not just a great resume, it's the skill-set, Ward can do everything and fight in any style.

Then Mayweather, he has even more skill and ability to adjust to any style than Ward.

Those two are the clear #1 and #2 in the eyes of 90%.

Pacquiao leftovers? Mayweather has fought Oscar (before Pac), Hatton (before Pac), Mosley (before Pac), Marquez (who iced Pac).....

If Donaire beats Rigo convincingly, I will have to put him above Mayweather, but I still have Ward at number 1 for clearing out the stacked 168 division and doing it as dominantly as he did.

Donaire's opposition in the last couple years has just been so superior to mayweather's that I cant put Floyd above him if he beats rigo.

It's easy to look good when you only fight once a year against non-top competition. And Mayweather did not look good against Cotto.

Guerrero might be ranked highly right now, but lets face it, 147 is weaker than it has been in decades. All the big dogs are gone.

I think Donaire is a very good fighter, but I must be the only one who thinks that Donaire hasn't had the greatest of competition due to his weight class. That keeps me from putting him above the Wards and Mayweathers of the world.
