Americans are so fervent about gun rights because it was guns that allowed the common man to form militias to help fight off the British.

It was guns that allowed the common man to protect their homes and families against raids from the Native Americans.

It was guns that provided some protection for the common man in the Old West against outlaws and bandits.

Basically guns are part of our history. We know that maybe we wouldn't be here today if our ancestors didn't have them.

If you're implying that we invaded the Native Americans land don't worry...I realize that.

But when cultures clash one of them has to win and one of them has to lose, sadly.

If we invaded their land then wouldn't what they did be considered self defense?

            Yes it would.

If you want you can read my statement as "It was guns that allowed the common man to steal the Indian's land."

Although Volunteers, Minutemen, and Militias were part of the uprising the British would have smashed our ancestors. Giving credit to them is understandable but misdirected. It was the French and their military that provided the real force to fight off the British. I see where you're going with your argument but its off. The mythical memories of the Wild West and the post civil war insecure south is where most of the gun loving nuts are and the NRA basically markets to these 2 groups/regions or whatever you want to call them. And the reason Northern states are so strict with their gun laws is because the illegal guns that do make it up here originate from...you guessed it....the deep south and the Wild West.

What you say about French help is true but Dan Morgan's Riflemen and Francis Marion's men (among many others) played a big part in many pivotal moments of the war.

Their experience fighting on the frontier and fighting Indians proved very disruptive to the British. You can even say that they were early developers of guerrilla warfare.
