Wilfredo Gomez Hospitalized in Critic Condition

The triple world boxing former champion Wilfredo 'Bazooka' Gomez is in critical but stable condition in hospital Mutual Aid, in San Juan, after suffering respiratory failure last night.

According to Dr. Ricardo Miranda, internist who treats the metropolitan hospital, the tough puncher was admitted to hospital last night after he suffered complicate infection in the airways. Gomez, 56, also suffers from obstructive sleep apnea. The athlete had been admitted during the weekend but had been discharged by improving their health.

"Over the last few days had a respiratory tract infection, making it decompensation and caused respiratory failure last night and had to intubate" he said.

"Right now, is in a critical but stable condition in terms of his vitals are stable, chest plates are well ... But we have a respirator and sedated to avoid starting the endotracheal tube, "said the doctor who treats first.

Miranda stressed that the condition is serious and Gomez the next 72 hours will be crucial for recovery. "If the thing continues, the outlook is changing as it may worsen hospital complications, including pneumonia."

Bazooka Nicknamed for his devastating punching power, Gomez is considered by many experts the best Puerto Rican fighter of all time.

Gomez represented Puerto Rico in the 1972 Munich Olympics, with just 15. He was also champion in the first World Amateur Boxing, held in Havana, Cuba in 1974. He won all his fights by knockout.

As a professional he won world titles at 122, 126 and 130 pounds and had a run of 32 wins in a row by knockout.

He retired in 1989 with lifetime record and 42 knockouts 03/01/44.

Sad to hear this, 56 is way too young to have these kinds of complications.
