Margarito was a bad ass, genuine hard man with a chin made of steel

Berto is a china chinned, hype job.

2 totally different products. You might not like Margarito for the way he sonned Cotto, but lets not pretend his chin and his will to win were not first class, because they were and nothing from Berto so far has left with me with the same impression

Margarito has wins over Cotto and Martinez. Berto doesn't even have a B level win.

i'd say the two big differences would be the handspeed and chin.

His will and chin got him no where in the long run. Hes 34 and his carreers been over for 2 yrs. Will and chin are great when you have the skill to go with it.

Possible steroid use and plaster aside. I never really understood the hype surrounding Berto (back then). I think most of it had to do with flash and frankly, because a lot of these hayman fighters get a whole lot of hype for no ****ing reason.

Margarito, there was no hype - just a guy willing to fight just about anybody to make a name for himself. I think fans were smart enough to recognize this, and that's why Margarito became such an appealing figure. I've said before, I don't think a lack of plaster was the reason he lost to Mosley, rather a combination of things (rapid weight loss effected ability to take a shot, styles, etc.) When Margarito came back versus Pac, he really didn't look awful, maybe not the same, but not like the complete opposite of what he once was. No fighter (except maybe marquez 4 in spurts) has looked superhuman versus Pac, so what did you expect him to like in that fight? The guy had a good run in his prime and he even came back and gave the best fighter at the time a solid showing of himself.

Going back to Berto, the guy is still young and there's time to learn and progress. Him and Hunter(?) may assess some issues and we'll see. One thing about Berto that goes unsaid, he's given us some entertaining bouts. Even his losses have been quite competitive in spurts and none of which were one sided. So I'd still be interested in seeing him against solid competition, an Ortiz rematch would be nice.

                    Essentially Margarito>Berto

Spot on. Tony would have taken Berto's soul with ease.
