HBO is killing their brand from a boxing standpoint.

The ONLY thing HBO really has going for them at this point is Lampley/Kellerman/Jones Jr/Merchant/Lederman. Those guys are what REALLY makes the HBO brand. Nothing else. Now these guys will not be covering some of the sports biggest fights. That REALLY sucks.

The Showtime commentators are perfectly capable of calling fights, but they always come off as 2nd tier to the HBO guys.

You can't replicate Lederman's "OK Jim..."

or Roy Jones subtle one ups on the other guys opinions because he's boxed and they haven't.

    Lampley's random comments and antics

Kellerman's EXTREMELY insightful comments and analysis.

The HBO guys and their chemistry is special and endearing. No matter how good the action is in the ring or who is in the ring, Showtime fights never feel quite as major to me for these reasons.

Boxing needs a dictatorship...I hate this ish.

there's a couple of really dumb posters in this thread...

so hbo has the rep...who gives a ****, people don't subscribe to a network because of the network's rep...it's about their programming and hbo is looking piss poor in that department when cutting ties with gbp...

which leads to the budget question...how many of u really believe hbo won't limit their budget as a result of this decision? I don't think they're looking to make a loss here..while the signing of mayweather and adding to the stable of gbp will likely add subscribers and increase SHO's budget for boxing...it's simple economics really

tr doesn't have a deep stable...I find it laughable people mention fighters like vargas or alvarado who are entertaining but nowhere near elite...shaw, dibella, duva promote few good champions, goossen still has ward though

No...I'm saying HBO has freed its budget from the grips of Haymon/GBP and will be able to work with everyone else and it'll result in a lot of good programming because they should be able to afford good diverse fight cards.

So if Floyd wants to fight Sergio on Showtime do you think Lou Bibella and Sergio will say no we only fight on HBO.

            Couldn't disagree more.

If you read the comments by boxing fans on this site, others and the internet in general, Showtime has the much better announcers.

Lederman is getting senile, Lampley has a great voice but his commentary is avg at best, Roy Jones used to be good but as of late it seems his biased is showing and Max used to be young and fresh and now is a company guy.

Bernstein is the best in the game PERIOD. The MMA guy is annoying I can't lie but Paulie is the best fighter/announcer in boxing. Joe Cortez is a non factor I agree but for me, I will take Bernstein over any guy on HBO combined.

HBO is cutting some of their boxing budget this year, Showtime is increasing it.

Everyone is always in a rush to label an event "the end of boxing... The
End of TR, the end of GBP, the end of HBO". GTFOH. HBO will be fine, Sho will be fine, as will TR and GBP. We won't see Mares- Donaire nor other TR vs GBP but that's no different than before HBO made the announcement yet her we are still.

And Top Rank may hit a lull for a while but they have some serious young talent. Mikey Garcia, Puerto Rican Olympian Felix Verdejo, Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez and Jesse Magdaleno all have the potential to be big ratings generators.

Top Rank and HBO will be relevant in the boxing world for a while.
and which credible opponents will they have left to fight?

pac and martinez don't have much time left in the sport...neither has marquez

ww and lww ranks are filled with gbp fighters

donaire won't fight mikey...can't fight mares...I don't think john will come to the US unless he's offered a significant payday and I doubt HBO is dying to promote that one

most of those prospects will have to find a spot on undercards or build themselves on lesser networks, the first being nearly impossible seeing as TR has about 3 star fighters in their stable who are already discussing retirement

Are you dense? I'm saying HBO doesn't have to use a lion's share of its money on GBP anymore. They are free to make other fights with the other 99 promotors. GBP and Sho are the only ones working with exclusivity nobody else is. Obviously Sergio and DiBella will work with Sho, HBO, ESPN, NBC Etc etc. but lets get one thing straight: May will
                    NEVER fight Sergio.
