Putting on great fights isn't enough you have to be marketed well. I think people overlook the fact that boxers are essentially products. Why do people buy a particular product other another? 9 times out of 10 is because it has been marketed as the superior brand.
De La Hoya has been marketed as the Golden Boy, Mayweather has been marketed as p4p #1, Tyson the baddest man on the planet etc. Whether they put on a show or whether they have an interesting personality people believe they are buying into something special.
Really speaking Ward is a mismanaged fighter. As a product he's not being sold to the boxing community. It's has little to do with his level of opposition as fighters like Canelo, Broner and Chavez Jr. have made a name for themselves fighting blown up fighters, small fighters or journey men. His lack of exposure has everything to do with his promoters/management. Top Rank or Golden Boys promotion would have the casual fans believing Ward is the best thing to hit the sport.
