Hopkins wouldn't want to lose to Ward, so it comes handy being able to proclaim 'friendship' and avoid this fight.

      Ward's dad is white.

I think even Hopkins knows he couldn't beat Ward at this stage in his career.

Mutual respect. Plus what the guy said about Vigil Hunter.

If Hopkins doesn't want to fight the best, maybe it's time to retire.

He already fought Dawson at 175. I think moving down to 168 would be a detriment at this stage of his career.

Do you really expect him to be fighting a P4P king?

who cares. they're in different weight classes for now and there's no great demand for the fight. and if Ward beat Hopkins (as he would), he wouldn't get a bunch of credit for it. least of all from you, Earl.

I wouldn't expect that, no. But then there's no need for Hopkins even bringing it up in the first place. Maybe he wanted to make sure 'that no one suggested it for him'.

Anyway, Hopkins is a legend. And he should retire soon.

They are often "successors" because they've beaten the previous top guy. I've never heard that Ward and Hopkins are such close friends, apart from maybe meeting at fights and having a little chat.

pause at 1:22...look over B.Hop's right shoulder and you'll see the young Ward holding one of daddy's belts
