Are there any books, seminars, videos, etc. that my dad could get to help him in training me?? The only experience he has in boxing is being a fan, he knows it well just not from a training perspective. I trained for a few years with a really good local trainer but he moved away and I live in a small town with no other gyms at all outside of MMA. I never had time to actually compete in high school because I played 3 sports and boxing was a way to stay in great shape. Now at age 20 I want to get started before it's too late. I'm working on getting a job within the next year with my degree in a bigger city with legit gyms but for now this is my only option. Any suggestions for ways to help me train without an actual trainer? Thanks for any help.

You'll need to be dedicated as **** if you don't want a trainer. If you have sparring partners*, a jump rope, a bag (maybe) and some running shoes, you can prepare yourself for fights, but it'll be hard. You'll need to motivate yourself not to slack off and get high. Your dad just needs to keep cool in the corner and help you recover by giving you water and taking out your mouthpiece between rounds. Tell him to stay calm because cornermen who panick too much will **** up your gameplan in the ring. It's easier to get fights with a trainer, but you can ask around other gyms or whatever.
* I would recommend having more than one sparring partner, so you can at least experience different fighting styles before you step into the ring for real.Comment

Ohh no I definitely want a trainer, there just are none around here willing to dedicate time to me. That's why I'm working on saving up money to move to a bigger city. But it will be about a year before I can do that and I still want to fight for this year at least for the experience. You'll need to be dedicated as **** if you don't want a trainer. There are many self taught fighters and father & son duos who have had decent careers.
A few that come to mind; The guy who recently fought Kelly Pavlik, he was self taught & didn't even start training until he was in his 20s and had no/very little amateur experience.
Muhammad Rachman taught himself and didn't even do padwork until late in his career where he paid a friend to hold the pads for him.
Mirko Cro Cop taught himself from watching movies and rehearsing the moves in an empty field with a makeshift heavybag hanging from a tree!
You can learn more from tape than anywhere else IMO. You just gotta study and put the graft in. Anythings possible if you work hard enough for it.Comment
