This is exactly the moral of this story. Not sure why everybody is having such a hard time comprehending this. Martinez would not be scared of Canelo.

^^Now all the folks who say Martinez is the P4P king can STFU. Martinez himself knows who the real king is.

Yeah if he's only willing to move down for Floyd that means he knows he'll be weight drained at 154 so he won't do it unless it's for a huge payday.
Martinez knows where the real money and prestige is you mean. But I do agree with you that it sounds like he can't comfortably make 154 and it is only worth the strain if it is a big fight with Mayweather. Wouldn't give Canelo props by saying Sergio is ducking/afraid of him when Sergio is waaaaay better and would brutalize Canelo. That fight ends earlier in favor of Martinez.

Because it's easier and more convenient to believe what you want then to actually accept the truth. That's pretty much how it is on boxingscene.

        • Martinez would beat Mayweather even at 154. Floyd relies heavily on his speed advantage and counter punching. Martinez is quite fast and is a good counter puncher as well. Floyd can adjust but so can Martinez. The differences are that, Floyd is not as strong at JMW then he is at WW and his speed would not be a factor against Martinez. Sergio can end it with one good connect. Floyd is a tough fighter but anywhere over 147 and he has a more difficult time with bigger fighters. Sergio would be too big and is too good for Mayweather skill set. Floyd would be in the fight but Sergio would make it uncomfortable for him. I always said that fight would be a chess match but Sergio being bigger, fast and a lefty, on top of that a technical fighter would have enough to pull it off. Two of my top best fighters technically but would lean towards Martinez. Floyd would not be strong enough at 154 to keep Martinez at bay.

          • It really makes no difference what Canelo or Martinez does or doesn't do in their career. Mayweather will not fight either ,regardless of fan, promoter,God, etc... pressure. Alexander seems likely to be his next opponent.

Of course Martinez wants the biggest payday in boxing but he said many times that he also considers Floyd to be the P4P king, his nuthuggers need to understand that.

Martinez relies on his speed and athleticism way more than Floyd, his whole style is built on that, unlike Floyd who is a thinker and has a fundamentally sound defense. Martinez would look very ordinary against a faster and more skilled fighter so of course Floyd's speed would be a factor. The things Martinez does to set up his attacks wouldn't work on Floyd, he'd drop his hands to get Floyd to open up and he'd get popped with straight right hands all night. Martinez is not that type of pressure fighter that you need to keep at bay, he does his best work on the backfoot.

                  • If Canelo wants to be considered one of the best p4p he at least have to go up in weight instead of having ww come up in weight

First off, ward doesn't come in that heavy on fight night, u must be talking about Chavez Jr, and how is that any different from the comparison with Martinez and Floyd! Floyd comes in at the most weight of 151lbs, while Martinez comes in at at least 170lbs
