It HAS to be academic..meaning it has to do with something like; the economics of the sport, the medical aspect of the injuries, or the legal aspect of it being banned. Not sure which direction I wanna go.

          Why boxing should be banned?

AS a boxing fan that is kind of a crappy topic, but there are so many ills to the sport and not that many clear fixes given the stakeholders various interests never aligning.

That's all i could come up with. The problem is what academic group would care about that? Law majors?

Most academics would consider boxing barbaric thus think it should be gotten rid of (unless academics have changed since I was in school which I don't think they have). Also anyone concerned with health and brain damage so medical students. Just look at all the heat the NFL is getting for the health of it's participants~

It goes a bit beyond that. De La Hoya challenged the idea of mexican masculinity and was hated before beating Chavez. He didn't represent them and seemed more like a celebrity. Plus his fighting style and personality turned them off as well. Mexican fans didn't see Oscar as having that Mexican toughness, even before Chavez.

You could right about how the sport of boxing allows almost anyone to compete in terms of age and size. Some countries allow you to start fighting at the age of 15 or 16. And there aren't too many professional sports that a 100lb 5' foot man can compete in besides being a jockey.

the small divisions always get **** on in America, but many of these little guys are huge in their respective countries in Asia and Latin America.

You could talk about the GBP and TR fued that boxing has had to deal with for the past couple years.
