  • Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia on Russell's Performance, Facing Juanma

On Saturday night, inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, rising featherweight star Gary Russell Jr. (22-0, 13 KO’s) stayed on track with a dominating 10-round decision over Vyacheslav Gusev (20-3, 5 KO’s).

Russell was simply too fast and precise with his punches, as his methodical Russian opponent never found a way to break through or really make the fight competitive.

Always one to give a fair assessment of potential foes, recently-crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia gave credit to Russell when asked of his performance.

“He looked good,” Garcia told me shortly after the fight. “Used his right a lot; jab and right hooks. [He] had speed. He did the adjustments that were needed after he hurt his hand. He did what he needed to do to win.” [Click Here To Read More]

if russell can apply what he does to lower graded guys on a elite level there is no doubt in my mind that he would destroy micky garcia............

russell is lightning fast & has a very high work rate. (he's not gonna lose too many rounds) garcia would be playing catch up and banking on a late stoppage.

The interview really wasn't about them head to head. But if there's (no doubt) in your mind, you better find it quick. Because Mikey is more technically sound than anyone Russel has faced. His jab is just as good & his level of opposition is light years greater.

i read the interview........ my comment was towards a potential match up. & i said that IF (big if) russell can apply the same skills that we've seen against low grade opponents to elite opponents then theres no doubt in my mind that he would beat garcia.

the reason i say this is because mickey is vastly slower then russell. mickey has a lower work rate. i could see russell banking in the rounds leaving mickey in need of a late stoppage (thats just one way i see the fight)

& jab to jab.....i don't think garcias jab is anywhere near as good as russells. not even close. garcias jab is more proven against better opposition. but head to head russells looks much better...........it's just that it remains to be seen if he can put it all together on the elite level.

I don't see how you can draw a conclusion head to head. Another thing to take into perspective is that Garcia also has more reach. Meaning his jab, (which is very good), requires less distance to be closed. You can jab with a jabber & if Mikey establishes his jab on the outside before Russel closes the distance, he can render Russel's ineffective. And workrate can be cut in half when faced with a counterpuncher. Mikey is also 1 of the best in the game at that.

Mikey would catch Russel Jr coming in over and over again until he breaks.

I'm not gonna lie. head to head russells jab looks light years past mickeys.........maybe i need to go back and watch some of mickeys fights but I've never seen mickey triple up on a jab (in his entire career) mickey throws one at a time. I've seen russell triple up on his jab many of times. head to head theres just no debating that for me.....russell has the better looking jab.

Well head to head Mikey would have the rangier jab, he's kept better fighters at the end of it to date. Russel's is faster, however he hasn't kept good fighters at bay with his because he's never really faced any. I'm sure russel will have some success, but his only advantage is handspeed. Outside of that I'd say Mikey has the range & experience & maybe the power advantage too.

the way that i see this fight.

both guys coming out in a chest match. mickeys pawing with the jab & rusell is tripling up on the jab (battle of the jabs) since russells jab is much quicker & he's throwing twice as many, his jab finds the target more times then mickeys jab.

I see mickey eventually abandoning his counter punching style and trying to put on the presser...........
