This is the truth right here. FWIW man you are debating with guys who just started to follow the sport a couple of years ago. No one would be dumb enough to state that "teenage girls" were the reason Oscar was doing big numbers. Oscar was liked by everyone and they all bought his ppv. fights.

Also, Tyson was a star way before his antics. He would have done huge numbers based on his style alone. Yep his antics is what made him sale, post prison, but that was due to the fact he was done as an elite fighter as his heart wasn't into the sport anymore.

First off I never said anything like that. Secondly, if you ever experienced a delahoya fight live, and I have, what was always striking was the gender and age of those in attendance at the weigh in.

Those fans definitely purchased his ppvs. But in no way were they the only ones. I never stated or implied they were.

Mexicans aren't the only one's who watch and support boxing. I wonder how Ali became so great, or Leonard for that matter?

Teenage girls don't buy PPV's or attend fights in majority. Boxing fans do, grown men were fans of Oscar, and not just Latino's. Everyone liked him because he was personable, good looking and had a great story.

It all ties in. Leonard was the same way, so was Ali and so was Joe Lewis before him. It's not about race or gender, it's about the whole package and IMO Floyd has it but killed it with his ignorant antics.

Floyd needed the bad guy act because he was a pretty sober, flat personality. But Broner's a fun guy, a little brash for sure, but naturally more of a Hector Camacho/Naseem Hamed than a "Money Mayweather"

That's an interesting point you both make about Floyd. I do wonder if he could have gone the SRL/Oscar route and scooped all that additional money that comes with it.

I have to be honest, I don't like Oscar's persona very much. I find him to be relentlessly cheesy and pretty dull, I actually find Floyd's persona preferable. Leonard is definitely a more interesting guy in my opinion.

The point is though that despite Floyd's 'flat' personality and general lack of charisma when he speaks, he wouldn't have had to try very hard to emulate what Oscar did. Oscar's not quick witted either, nor is he an especially interesting or funny guy to listen to.

But nevertheless he built a huge media profile for himself that has enabled him to continue making obscene amounts of money. Floyd doesn't have that same profile, and the question is could he ever have had it? Could he ever have played that role, or would he have found it too difficult to contain whatever darkness it is that seems to be in him.

is he likely to take off in that arena? what i heard of him rapping didn't sound too promising, but successful musicians aren't always talented.


i guess my point was that Broner doesn't even need to convince anyone he's a thug or a bad guy or a villain. he's got a buoyant, self-confident, attractive personality without that stuff - the kind that will irritate stuck-up folk who can't deal with brash and hyper, but that others will people will be drawn to because they can see he's a fresh, fun guy (like Camacho). he needs to let that shine out.

I think broner's people have told him that there is big money in the villian role. HBO sure supports him. But he may end up completely changing his persona just like floyd did late in his career.

What about Ward? Real skilled,speaks perfect English and commentates as well. Why can't he do good numbers outside Oakland? Canelo doesn't speak English and probably does better numbers than Ward. So what does the language have anything to do with it?

Mayweather's key to success is the fact that everyone wants to see him lose because they can't stand his arrogance. Add in the fact that he has this unbeatable persona where one of the main questions in Boxing is "Who can beat Mayweather?". He needed to be a villianous character for it to work.

Burner's point was still correct. The ability to speak english is a must for any mega star, and 500k ppvs dont make u a mega star. so if thats your proof, then next time, just dont comment.
