Comments Thread For: Ortiz vs. Chagaev WBA Interim Title Clash in Play

According to Ricardo Rizzo, advisor to Dream Team Promotions, he is trying to put together a WBA interim title clash between heavyweights Luis "El Mercedes" Ortiz (19-0, 16KOs) and Ruslan Chagaev (30-2-1, 19KOs), the former champion. Ortiz is ranked at number two in the top ten, while Chagaev is ranked at third. Alexander Povetkin is the WBA's "regular' champion at the weight, while Wladimir Klitschko is the "super champion."

As if the WBA HW Title wasn't a big enough joke already.

The WBA is making a bad decision here.

They should give somebody else besides Chagaev a shot against Ortiz for the interim title. Someone like Pulev, Abdusalamov, Wawrzyk, Boytsov, or Pianeta would be better, because:

        1) things will be complicated because of Chagaev's Hep B antigen

        2) the sanctioning bodies should give some new people a chance at a belt instead of recycling the same boxers over and over again.

Finally Ortiz gets his shot!!! After this fight a fight with Wladimir will be excellent, or he could fight pusvetkin.

Another bad decision by the WBA. The WBA regular belt is a basically a belt for the WBA #1 contender who eventually gets to fight the WBA super champion. Neither Chagaev or Ortitz deserve a shot at it. Chagaev has done nothing since losing to Wlad in 2009. Ortitz has done even less.

Ortitz is ranked #44 on Box Rec and his second last fight was against some guy making his pro debut. How the F does a guy ranked #44 on Box Rec get a title shot?

I like Luis Ortiz he's a serious prospect and would hold his own against anybody out there. He's just not got the fights he needs to show his level. He's fought trash basically. He's in the exact same boat as David Price more or less. A super prospect that hasn't been able to show his level due to the awful level he's fought against. Ortiz maybe has fought at a higher level than Price but being from Cuba he has zero hype compared to Price who is now "a cert for a future place in the HOF after beating a 50 year old Matt Skelton".
