  • Hunter Khan : How is it going to work out?

I think Hunter is a great coach and the job he has done with Andre Ward is fantastic but he molded him from when he was a kid.I have no doubt if Hunter was Khan's coach from when he was a youngster Khan would be a far superior fighter. But Hunter is not teaching a kid from scratch he is teaching someone with grooved in habits that are not going to be easy to change.
Amir Khan is a flawed fighter with poor defense,no inside fighting skills and low level ring IQ. But he is FAST. The theory is if his deficiencies can be rectified he will be a great fighter. But when you have been fighting as long as Khan has with heavily ingrained habits making changes where they become automatic is a big ask especially where everything is thrown at warp speed. It is one thing learning new correct movements slowly but Khan is so fast he has to be on pure automatic and making real changes that will show and hold up under pressure is asking a lot.
Is it all to late for Khan to REALLY change. How do you see the partnership working out over time?

I think Hunter will teach him a lot of good things. But it does take time to groove new habits, I wouldn't expect to see it all come together for Khan until several fights down the road.

      Voted for slight improvements.

Khan just has so many glaring technical flaws and he doesn't strike me as someone who will be able to substantially improve them and apply them in the ring against better opposition.

Ring IQ & instincts aren't exactly his strong points.

The main things Khan needs to change are firstly his inclination to get in the pocket and throw so many combinations because he leaves himself too open to return fire. And secondly, bringing his defense back up quicker - both of these are connected in some ways. Use that great jab much more, instead of so many combinations.. and don't go back in straight lines when under pressure. - Hunter should be able to improve upon those things, in theory at least.

I just wonder if Hunter is going to overcomplicate things and end up causing confusion along the way. Khan's mistakes are fairly basic - the overeagerness to leap into range and throw combos is the main thing he needs to correct. He needs to feint more too.

In a few exchanges during the Molina fight he showed that he already learned better inside fighting skills, if you remember with his back against the ropes, it was Khan coming off looking far superior to Molina on the inside - in fact Al Bernstein even commented literally "Khan is a fine technical fighter" after seeing the inside work.

The main improvements I expect to see will be more down to how he manages himself in the ring and a willingness to take instructions and keep to them from Hunter than improvement in technique. That is something he can do , I don't see Hunter letting him throw multiple shot combos in the pocket with his loose technique which is open to counters,he will teach him how to use the ring better and what to do when he gets hurt, But as for being able to change his actual technique I think it may well be a case of you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I voted for slight improvement but not much. I just don't see how Khan be totally rebuilt without being taken out of the game for a long time. Half his mind will be on the next fight and that means gentle not drastic changes.

              It's a tough one.

Khan's been so used to fighting in his current way for so long, it's going to be a tough thing to try and break out from.

I keep hearing yes Khan is listening and stuff like that from interviews and stuff but Hunter's biggest task it going to be to try and curb Khan's natural instinct so that when he gets tagged he doesn't rush in and try to war it out.

He was getting tagged by Molina ******ly and if he does that against a Garcia or a guy that can ****, Khan's going to be doing his "Hey Macarena" dance all over the ring.

That said to judge him off the one fight is a bit harsh and he'll need a lot of time and work. I just doubt Khan's intelligence to listen and implement what Hunter's telling him to do in the heat of battle.

That and his natural instincts could work against him.

Either way it's going to be one hell of a ride watching it pan out.

The best thing i heard Hunter suggest for Khan is to stay in training between fights, not the physical stuff because hes obviously always in great shape, but it will give him so much more time to drill tactics and to get the basics down.

Khan does this then we could see a much improved fighter.

Otherwise i think its going to be difficult to get Khan out of the groove he is used to with only 8 weeks training at a time.

While i saw slight improvements, atm i have to agree with roach. Khan is who he is, a fighter. Plenty of times during combos/exchanges khan got caught with left hooks from Molina, molina just didnt have the power to seriously hurt khan. Imo, its only a matter of time before khan gets seriously hurt again.
