Just did a little reading on the condition his wife said he had...... It seems entirely possible he could have got HIV from having blood transfusions done

There were loads of people that got HIV from blood transfusions in the 80's, when gay people were allowed to give blood. At one point gay people were banned from giving blood in the UK although I'm not sure if that is true now.
