Actually he is in part right, over time, when you are exposed to more sun you produce more melanin. Melanin is what gives you a darker color. Melanin is what gives us our individual pigment. THe more melanin, the darker you are. Over time of prolonged exposure your body produces more melanin in order to protect you from the sun. Genes are passed down from generation to generation and this determines the offspring's pigment.
Mutation & adaption happens over generations, not a few years.
