Manchester’s Denton Vassell (146½lb) scored a big win over undefeated northern rival Ronnie Heffron (146¾lb) at the Manchester Arena on Friday night to retain his Commonwealth welterweight title, keep his ‘0’ intact and remind boxing fans why he was so highly rated when turning professional back in 2006. The 28-year-old shook off a year’s worth of rust in the early rounds before uncorking a pair of uppercuts, left and right, in round six that stiffened the 22-year-old’s legs, prompting referee Mark Green to step in at 1:56 of the round.

Vassel is a damn good fighter, although Heffron was a pretty flatfooted opponent. But we might see Vassel fighting some of the names at 147 if he puts on performances like that. His style is entertaining to watch, and his skills are good enough to compete at top level. He could prove to be a real threat to anyone in the division.

I like Vassell & though he was out for a year I was left gobsmacked to see he was a 3/1 underdog. He is a rough diamond in the welterweight division IMO
Very well rounded fighter, very strong & always in superb shape. He was actually a bodybuilder in his youth.
The uppercuts he landed on Heffron was stunning, he was out on his feet (good stoppage) & full credit to Heffron for remaining upright!

For me he is the best welter in the country behind Kell Brook.

Vassell vs Frankie Gavin would be logical with British & Commonwealth titles on the line + someones 0 would have to go!
