The case against JMM really comes down to his contact with Angel Heredia. This guy was nailed for distributing epo back in 2000, and avoided doing time because he spilled the beans on a whole host of doping athletes. That much is known.
Conte also alleges Heredia works with one or more of the elite Jamaican track teams, including Usain Bolt's Racers Track Club, who in Conte's opinion are definitely using a doping program.
Obviously there's a lot of conjecture here, and Conte is begging the question more than anything else, but there are certainly grounds for su****ion. JMM claims he knew nothing of Heredia's PED history, a very strange state of affairs if true.
Marquez is an elite athlete involved in huge money events and with a very comprehensive team around him. The idea that he would hire a conditioning coach without looking into that coach's background in detail is simply not believable. Something as significant as Heredia's run in with the authorities follows a guy around for his whole career and it's hard to imagine how Marquez could have heard of Heredia without also having heard those stories.
So really then, you have to wonder why JMM would say what he said. The options seem to be:
1. Marquez was lying, and was trying to downplay Heredia's PED expertise as a factor in him being hired
2. Marquez was lying, but just believed it the best way to handle the story
3. Marquez' people actually are that incompetent, and unknowingly hired a heavily tainted conditioning coach for their fighter.
I honestly don't know the answer myself. I don't think JMM's physical condition is anywhere near enough on its own to arouse su****ions, but from what we've seen in other sports, a guy working with a steroid dealer tends to only point to one thing.
I'm a massive JMM fan, and I do hope it's not true. And in my heart of hearts, I think he's contributed so much to the sport that I'd even be willing to turn a blind eye to it myself. As long as boxing fails to implement proper testing though, we're always going to have the possibility of stuff like this going on in the shadows.
