Depression is a mental illness. It's often triggered by a catalyst, usually a traumatic event. In Hatton's case, his brain chemistry was probably thrown off-balance by his perceived fall from the top. Not difficult to understand.
One has no control over this event, only in the subsequent treatment. But it's extremely difficult to grasp what to do if you've never experienced it before. One who's never been depressed literally cannot comprehend the complete hopelessness it produces. Being materially wealthy, or otherwise successful, makes no difference. Life seems to lose all meaning.
Asking a depressed person to "snap out of it" or "man up" is like asking an insane person to "stop being crazy". I don't know if Ricky is playing up his experience; but if he was truly depressed, he was undergoing what can only be described as a living hell.
