A prime Hagler beats the brakes off of Roy. People remember the Hagler that fought Hearns and Leonard. He was not in his prime at that point even though they were both great fights. A prime Hagler was on his toes and was an excellent boxer that had power in both hands, good defense, and a granite chin. He was an excellent fundamental fighter and southpaw. That spells disaster for even a prime Roy. I think a prime Gerald McClellan, a prime James Toney, and a prime Mike McCallum would beat Roy.

Roy was a great performer in the ring, maybe the greatest performer ever to put on boxing gloves. But, I have never seen him beat any A class fighter in their prime. If you go back and watch Toney and McCallum at 160 in their prime, its unbelievable to watch the level of pure boxing skills they brought to the table. They had the basic fundamentals down to an art. That would just be too much for a guy like Roy who strictly depended on his physical ability. Those guys were throwback fighters and very dangerous when at their best. Roy's chin would definitely gotten tested if he had faced them at their best. They were smart fighters that could break you down. Roy is the type of fighter that usually dominates a fight from beginning to end. He's never really had to make adjustments in the middle of a fight. And how can you truthfully adjust if you are not disciplined with the fundamentals? He would be forced to adjust against those guys and I think he would be unsuccessful.

The only one i can say %100 sure beats RJJ is the great Carlos Monzon. Granite chin, brutal power and slow but incredibly precise with his punches. Nobody could evade Monzon right.

its real simple man...jones just had james toney's number....didn't matter who toney had just beat prior...could've been after the barkley or the nunn fight, or the mcallum fight...same result...james always had to come down 30 or 40 lbs prior to a fight...
Roy doesn't beat Toney nor McCallum when they fought each other the 1st time.

YES their situation are similar in a way..

LET it GO, RJJ didnt beat the best/prime version of TONEY and it WAS toney's fault.
So when your weight drained all of the sudden as you insist he was although it was the same every fight your not prime anymore?

He fought the best toney beat his ass accept that.

Hagler, SRL, Greb, Ketchel & Monzon without even thinking about it.

I'm sure there are several others that would've beaten Jones Jr at middleweight too.

Okay hold on James toney has had the same damn style and good fundamentals his whole career ecspecially @ 160-168 so how is it that his skill was that much better at 160 then @ 168 with more exp?

And wtf great boxing skill are you talking about with the g man his power was his equalizer for everything his boxing Iq was not that great. His only shot would have been to knock Roy out if he couldn't do that and Roy caused him problem it woulda been tough **** for him.

The only one I'll give you is McCallum because of some of the problems he gave Roy and that I haven't seen to much of him. But his best days were 154 and 160 so anything 168 and above isn't gonna work well for him.

Gerald McClellan beat Roy in the amateurs. Who knows how that fight would have turned out at pro level.

I couldn't see it being anything other than an action fight.
