ANDRE WARD SURPRISED ON BRANDON RIOS’ VICTORY OVER RICHARD ABRIL – BOXING NEWS

Andre Ward, the WBA and WBC super middleweight fighter, was highly surprised over the match results of Brandon Rios vs. Richard Abril.

The fight which saw Abril completely dominating Rios, ended up with Rios as victor. Not only Ward, fans and other fighters were shocked over the results. Social media was flooded with comments and posts claiming the decision being unjust.

Ward, through his Twitter account, said, “I’m shocked!! Absolutely shocked!!! This is what hurts our sport!!! Feel bad for Abril!!”

Both the judges had Rios as winner on the scorecards. Judge Jerry Roth scored the fight 116-112 while judge Glenn Trowbridge scored it as 115-113. Both the judges had Rios on the higher end, which definitely was a point of frustration for Abril who gave his best during the fight.

Throughout the fight, we saw Abril in control while Rios was having trouble in reach Abril. In addition, since Rios could not make weight at 135 lbs (was 139 lbs), he looked more like a loser than a winner.

Even after being 4 lbs heavier than required, Rios could not do much in the ring. Right after Rios was announced as the winner, fans and fighters across the globe showed their disappointment over the decision.

However, since Rios could not make weight at 135 lbs, he was unable to qualify for the winner’s bonus of $50,000.

As Ward has put it, the decision was a disappointment for the boxing industry. Ward is currently trying to make a comeback on June 2 in Oakland, California.

However, nothing regarding his opponent or his bout has been revealed yet. He is among the top boxers of today with a top-notch profile. Recently in an interview, Ward said that he wants to fight Lucian Bute but Bute’s camp was not up for the match. Things between Bute and Ward got serious after Bute and his promoter claimed that Ward was trying to duck them.

In his previous interview, expressing his amusement over Bute’s reaction, Ward said, “I was disappointed. Bute and his promoter were screaming and yelling that I was ducking them, then they go and make a two-fight deal with Froch where if he loses, he takes Froch back to Canada? I didn't understand that. I was never ducking him, I just wanted to build up the fight.”

Castillo, er, Rios came back and was 139. Official weight goes down 137. He can't win title. That's 2 fights in row he blows weight.

Scorecard and analysis: (I skipped in between rounds)

          1. Abril
          2. Abril
          3. Rios
          4. Abril
          5. Rios
          6. Abril
          7. Abril

          9. Abril
          10.Abril
          11.Abril
          12.Abril

Abril was robbed badly, terrible decision. I had Rios winning 2 rounds, although could have won 3 or possibly 4 at very most.

BUT.. Rios was clearly weight-drained and I didn't think Abril was all that great. It was a sloppy fight, lots of holding, hitting and grabbing behind the head. Much of the time Abril didn't do shit, he just held on and stood in the pocket to let Rios whale on his left arm. The commentators were biased as hell towards Abril.

My opinion, while I think Abril can give Rios problems regardless, Rios could very well stop him if not weight drained. Abril does not have the power to keep Rios off of him.

Agree with you 100 percent. Abril made it a sloppy fight. I hope the rematch is made at 140 or 147. Let's see if Abril can hold on for his life..

The problem wasnt tha abril hit and hold or nothing more..the big problem is that rios cant change his stile when something is affecting him..he cant adapt...he have alot of heart but he just will win against brawlers...skilled boxers have nothing to fear against someone who dont have defence, no head movement....no footwork...no jab..no outside game..sorry but @ 140 or 200 abril school him again and again..

I would like to add that in the beginning of the fight, Abril was giving Rios a bit of a boxing lesson, but towards the end of the fight he got lazy and didn't do much. Luckily for him Rios was completely out of gas. A heavy hitter probably could have knocked Rios out.
