When I got into Boxing I started watching the old Heavyweights (and still do). I do understand that there more and more boxers today who lack that old school mentality, albeit you look at lower divisions there are some throwback fighters eg Carl Froch who are willing to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime.

In relation to Heavyweight division it has it peaks and valleys (this is nothing new) it won't be long till someone exciting and captivating comes along and takes the reigns again.

And no, you cannot compare guys like Lewis and the Klitschkos to Primo Carnera, no. just no.

Ernie Shavers is getting mentioned way too much here. He was a bad fighter who happened to have a massive punch.

He is lucky not to have met up with Frazier or Foreman who would have pounded him back into obscurity. Like Ron Standers should have

            I agree with you.

People keep on saying that boxers nowadays are stronger, I don't see many actual Ko's (not TKo's),

What I see is slower, less refined. less complete fighters.

The sport is facing an era of decline.

" Today there are less than half the number of professional fighters that there was in 1955. In the 1920's there were more professional fighters licensed in New York City than there are licensed in the entire world today. So the numbers today mean something"

Size and strength are a lot less important than speed and coordination in boxing.

You can throw Bob Sapp in a ring, and most HWs would put him in a stretcher by the end of the night.

He was talking about Dempsey, Frazier and Ali in the opening post, not Foreman or Liston. And I don't really believe light heavyweights or cruiserweights like Dempsey, Marciano or Ali were hitting harder than today's top heavyweights. And I just believe Wlad is one of the hardest hitters in boxing history (so does Emanuel Steward).

Wladimir is actually very fast and mobile for his size. Its just that his opponents are so willowy and he's so conservative now we don't get to see him at full potential.

bob sapp isnt much of a boxer. What you are really saying is put him in with someone with way more boxing experience than him and he gets beat in... boxing.

Yeah I really miss the technique of the golden age of HW boxing where we had a champ who would wind up his punches from behind his back and used a cross armed defense so bad no fighter since has ever used it.
