Lyle Fitzsimmons is a jack a$$, Rios and Alvarado didn't show much defensive skills however they did illustrate offensive skills. I guess he rather prefer watching a hit and hold fighter like Ward who he praises so damn much! Also, Rios did beat a couple decent boxers such as Acosta and Peterson but there is no credit given there! How come a slugger like Lucas gets praised so much more than Rios when they are both brawlers? I'm starting to think race plays a factor cuz this is some bs!

Lol, race? Matthysse is Argentinian, you think a Mexican-American has things hard because of his race but an Argentinian doesn't?

I understand the point the article is making but it's just so unnecessary. We know Rios isn't the second coming of Pernell Whitaker. But one of the great aspects of boxing is the different styles.

Rios, to me, also symbolises one of the fundamental aspects of the sport - the idea that will and mental fortitude is as important as pure talent.

Boxing is not a sport that trades solely on technical excellence - it's about so much more than that.
This! Every word of this! Can't believe some of these posts, spoiled ass boxing fans..

I'm saying Mexicans are viewed in boxing as one dimensional(come forward style) when in fact there is a variety of boxing styles that Mexico has produced in the past and present. Also, in my honest opinion Mexicans receive the most robberies than any other latin race or any other race. Soto-Karras vs Jones 1, Ponce De Leon vs Broner, Marquez vs Pac 2 & 3, De La Hoya vs Trinidad, Beltran vs Martinez, De La Hoya vs Mosely 2, Castillo vs Mayweather etc. I also acknowledge Mexicans have had a FEW gift decisions as well however the majority of robbery decisions have been against Mexicans.

Pointless article, seriously. I don't think anybody here considers Rios to be a technical boxer, so it makes you look ****** to point out the obvious. But who said boxing only needed technical boxers, which I also like to watch. We need more "fighters" like Rios, willing to take on the big hitters like himself. I personally think Alvarado would trash many of the fighters in the division. And who are you to say they're not skilled? Rios puts combinations better than most, avoids a percentage of punches (even with his style) and has the heart and determination like no other. So it's very shortsighted to say he's not destined for excellence, he's a warrior! He was born to fight as its apparent on every interview and between every round.

Shaking my head at haters. Atleast hes exceeding expectations.
I rather root for an underrated overachiever (rios) than an overrated underachiever (floyd)

You must love "slick" boxers who have long careers by way of not fighting and instead run, hug, push, dance, etc. They have no cohones as far as I'm concerned. Duran and Chávez had longer careers than Leonard or Whitaker, both girls. You must learn about Latino culture where machismo (being a man ) is more important than "winning like a girl"

duran had a very deep bag of tricks, especially by the end of his run at the higher weights when he was still relatively fresh.

he was every bit the cutie. the rumor that he remained some no-prisoners killing machine after he left lightweight is perpetuated by those who have not seen enough of his fights.

roberto duran was a master craftsman, and very slick.

You may call it ******, but a warrior wants to go out on his shield. Not all boxers have that instinct. And it's pretty ****** to criticize his craft when he works at it to perfect it. Alvarado was not an easy opponent, he averaged over 100 punches per round and still couldn't put him away. So don't knock on another man's craft, specially from the comfort of your home.
