I personally think the ref should have let the fight go on like 5-10 more seconds. But its not an easy job because alvarado was stunned bad and laying on the ropes. But still they were in a war. If rios would have thrown another combination and landed most of the punches with alvarado not doing anything then yea its a good stoppage. At least give alvarado a chance to do something back. The ref didn't give alvarado that chance to me. Even tho he was hurt, his hands were up.
We are never going to get another Corrales vs. Castillo

Blame Alvarado for not taking a knee. Rios swarmed him after he rocked Alvarado and didn't let him off the hook. Alvarado totally gave up his defensive posture and was trying to just get breathing room at the end. I can't be mad at the ref for calling it off, he did Mile High a favor. Live to fight another day.Comment

It all happened so fast, but on the reply I thought the stoppage was perfect and the referee represented his intentions well in the interview. Alvarado was rocked and and not throwing back; Brandon was landing at will with big punches.
It's up to Alvarado to either take a knee or throw punches back. Of course Alvarado said he was fine; Castillo said the exact same thing after the Corrales fight.
So what if he hadn't stopped it right then? What should he have waited for? One more big punch? Two? Alvarado got hit and even partially turned his back to Rios at one point, and then ate some more big punches without answering.
Great work by the ref. Let's do it again.

Right. I'm not saying Alvarado would have made a comeback but the guy fought his ass off and deserved the chance. At least give him a standing 8 count like another poster mentioned.Comment

I agree with the TS, we're never going to have a Corrales/Castillo or a Gatti/Ward...or at least any time soon.
I'll just step forward and say that Pat Russell is ass...one of the worst refs out there. Dude is about as incompetent as they come.
Funny how he was trying to give an "I Have a Dream" speech after this stoppage, but nobody could find his @ss after he d1cked up the decision in Dawson/Hopkins 1, last Oct. at the Staples Center.
People are really out there saying that we got out Gatti/Ward and Corrales/Castillo, and they agreed with the stoppage. Yeah right.
Quick question, had Pat Russell been the ref in Gatti/Ward and Corrales/Castillo...would we ever have witnessed those classics? I'll help you out...more than likely, not.Comment

I thought the ref got it spot on, it was a gruelling fight and both had taken a lot of heavy shots. No way Alvarado would have recovered even if he had taken a count, and dont get me wrong, I like to see a war as much as anyone but I dont want to see any fighter get permanently hurt or worse, killed.Comment
