he wasnt afraid of negroes. but his promoter tex rickard said that he would never again promote a fight between mixed races ever again after he promoted jeffries vs johnson.

along with rickard, dempsey's manager doc kearns wasnt too keen on giving blacks a shot, either. for rickard, it was prejudice. for kearns, it was probly fear.

if dempsey took on fighters like fred fulton, jess willard, and luis firpo without an ounce of fear, then im sure he wouldnt have been afraid of wills or any other black fighter at the time.

Whoever saying that it was ok for Johnson to fight only whites and not ok for Dempsey to fight only whites needs to seriously think about what they are saying...

Besides, Dempsey had no choice in the matter. Johnson absolutely did, and would not under any circumstances fight another black fighter once he got the title. So because Johnson is black it's ok for him to refuse to fight other blacks? LOL Cmon...

Really? And yet it's interesting that you idolize Tyson, who idolized Dempsey and still does, to a certain extent. Tyson patterned himself after Dempsey, 100%. If you watch Dempsey fight, in many instances, it's like watching a skinnier, whiter Tyson fight. And if you think he's gutless, then you've obviously never seen a fight of his in your life.

I know you're just being ****** and trolling, but couldn't resist a chance to make you look like an imbecile...

I never buy that crap about "well, that was a different time, he was raised to be a racist." Yeah, so was I. So what else is his excuse?

let me clarify, I was raised by racist parents, but I'm not at all against **********. heck, I'm a white guy and I directed a Baraka play, Dutchman. In the 60s and 70s Baraka was sort of a radical, but he couldn't have been as racist as he claimed, married a white woman, then divorced her. Sort of what Dutchman was subliminally about.

** Johnson never showed he was better than Jeannette who had beaten him the year before he won the title from Burns. He never faced Jeannette, McVea, and Langford in their heavyweight primes. He was afraid of losing his status if they beat him. It was much easier facing white journeymen and middleweight types. When you look at the white heavyweights back then, he didn't face all the top white heavies either, like Smith, Carpentier, and McCarty. In fact, Willard and Hart were the best near prime true heavies he ever faced, and we saw what happened.

Johnson did his best work before he won the title. He pretty much coasted after winning the title.

his manager didn't allow dempsey tofight black fighters once he held the title, probably 'cuse of the jack johnson fiasco. by no means was dempsey afraid of them.
