What happens is the promoters choose who is the best option for that fighter at that time. What will make the most money and fill the venue. It's hilarious to me the way fans think the fighter is in control of every aspect of his career. The manager is there to handle the money, the trainer is there to train him and the promoter sets up the fight in the best interest of the fighter at that point in his career.

Fighters can say they don't want to fight a certain fighter or say they want some specific fighter but it's rare. Most of the time it's about money, plain and simple. A fighter is ready to fight, that's what he does. It's the job of the promoter and manager to make sure they are bringing that fighter up properly.

That's why when fans say "he's ducking so and so" they don't know what they are talking about.

In the case of Canelo, it makes perfect sense to fight Cotto. He's a step up, you have the Mexico v PR thing going and it's a bigger fight money wise you could argue than Canelo v Martinez.
    great post.

Cotto vs Canelo just makes too much sense. If Cotto beats Trout thats a HUGE fight for May.

Why would Martinez fight Golovkin at this point in his career? All risk and no reward. Barely anyone knows the guy and his resume is unimpressive. Martinez is a top P4P fighter who is looking for big paychecks at this stage in his career. Makes no sense for him to fight Golovkin.

Everyone wants a piece of him because he makes money; being able to beat Miguel Cotto would be a big check on your resume and your future success. There are tons of fighters that have lost to Cotto and are still in the top of their divisions. You're fooling yourself if you think Cotto is shot or no good. He just gave Mayweather his hardest fight ever.
Yes..... Cotto has always ate too many punches in his career as a professional. NO, Castillo 1 was the hardest fight in Mayweather's career. Hell Demarcus Corley and Phillip Ndou did better against Mayweather than Cotto did. Cotto has earned my respect but in my opinion, Cotto only got 3 rounds out of that 12 round fight with Floyd and Cotto almost got dropped by a Mayweather upper cut if he didn't hold on to Floyd. Martinez would annihilate Cotto and put him on a stretcher.

The funny thing about it is that Golovkin KO'd one guy in the States that no one ever heard of in dominate fashion but all of a sudden he is a threat to someone who is just all around dominate in Sergio Martinez. It's easy to look good against guys who don't have the proper skill set to adjust and be able to pull out the win. Martinez would be my favorite against any of them middle weights in the division. Fans still haven't learned that a big punch is not always key. Martinez deserves his big pay day in the sun. Let the rest of the guys at 160 fight each other and the one left standing forces Martinez's hand. Same thing was going on about that kid that beat Daniel Jacobs (can't even remember his name because he did nothing after that)..... oh yeah.... Dimitry Pirog who went 12 against Nobuhiro Ishida.

Agreed. Martinez has been dominant for years now and paid his dues. The rest of 160 should worry about each other and build their own names more. I think Martinez should ditch 160 and go get the paydays at 154. Cotto, Alvarez and Mayweather.

Both of you are delusional. Canelo has a big fan base. Probably bigger than Cotto. Trust me, Canelo with Golden Boy makes the calls. Cotto just has the New York and vicinity area, Puerto Rico, and maybe if some fans fly to Vegas. Canelo has California, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, ( states ) Chicago, Mexico, and many sponsors like Mexican TV networks, and others.

Shut your mouth! To say Canelo is a bigger name that Cotto is either stupidity or blind fanaticism on your behalf! Cotto fights in NY most of the time cuz that's where his biggest fan base is. If Cotto was to fight in Mexico today, he would sell every single seat in the arena faster than any previous Canelo fight!
