It's one of the biggest delusions of heavyweight boxing fans that "more athletic is better". It's not. It's worse. You know exactly that Ustinov would have more chances against Wlad than Eliseo Castillo.
Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko (= 2 of the best KOers the boxing world has ever seen) could not KO some of their chubby opponents, e.g. Timo Hoffmann, Corrie Sanders, Sam Peter, Chris Byrd, Dereck Chisora, Ibragimov, Chris Byrd etc. whereas their athletic opponents, even those with a good record, like Herbie Hide, Sosnowski, Eliseo Castillo, Mormeck caused hardly any threat.
The Klitschkos can allow themselves to be so athletic because they are so unbelievably skilled. But if you are less skilled (for example like Clay/Ali) or lack in some other department (e.g. height) you need to be chubby/fat to compensate.
And I am talking ONLY about heavyweight. At lower weights there are weight limits, hence bodies are approximately equally sized and punches are weaker hence usually the more athletic (= faster) opponent wins.
At heavyweight fatter is better, except for the case where you are extremely skilled or if you are unconditioned. If you think otherwise you have been fooled by lower weight classes, the Rocky movie or superhero comics.Last edited by hweightblogger; 09-28-2012, 07:27 PM.

Yes.
Just google for Joe Frazier images. That's his physique.
And that photo was taken before his title fight against Buster Mathis.
No, he isn't. He is 3 years younger than Vitali Klitschko now.
Ali was known for that kind of expansion and for a de****able training attitude.
Here you have another pic of Ali before his first fight against Frazier:
http://www.heavyweightblog.com/2272/...-vs-joe-frazer
"His belly billowing over his trunks, an overlump Ali weighed almost 230 pounds as he waited to spar in his 5th street gym 4 weeks ago."
"Ali's training camp is less disciplined than Frazier's. During the six weeks he lived in Miami Beach, there were days when he skipped a workout altogether. Some days he did not spar… He had trouble with his weight. When training began, he was near 230 pounds and he vowed not even to look at scales until one week before the fight. But three weeks ago he ambled by a scale in the gym, stepped on and whistled "226!" he cried. He vowed immediately to cut out the several Pepsis he drinks every day, but the vow did not last long. "
(LIFE magazine, March 1971)
Boxing fans have to finally wake up and face the reality. It's TYPICAL for HW champs to be chubby/fat. Being conditioned+fat is an advantage. Tyson's and the Klitschkos' body physique is atypical for HW champs. If you think the opposite you have been spoiled by the Klitschkos.
This era is more athletic than Ali's era.
Are you trying to prove that HW Champs are notoriously chubby? And your proof is what, that they gain weight between fights? Wow, what a surprise that is. I don't mean to ruffle your feathers but do you realize how ridiculous your argument is, especially with the proof that you have presented?
Part of your proof was a photo of Smokin Joe with a bit of a spare tire. You claim the photo was taken before his fight with Mathis. And that may be true but the important question should be how long before the fight was the photo taken? Was it the day before, the week before or was it two months before?
I only ask because I just watched part of the Frazier-Mathis fight on You Tube and guess what? Joe had no noticeable spare tire what so ever. And he must have been in decent shape because he was outweighed by 40 pounds and took Mathis out in 11. And if that wasn't good enough for Joe he also weighed in six pounds less then his previous fight. Not bad for a supposed chubby fighter.
You also quoted an article about Ali from 1971. Ali weighed 215 pounds for his first fight with Frazier in 1971. I also looked at a few rounds of that fight, isn't You Tube great? And guess what? No spare tire around Ali and he looked to be in great shape. Matter of fact 215 would be his lowest weight for the next fourteen fights until he fought Joe again in 1974 and weighed in at 211.
I will ask you again are you trying to prove that Ali and Frazier were chubby HWs because they were chubby in training camp? Maybe I am wrong but isn't losing weight part of going to training camp? And it is not as if boxers are the only athletes that are guilty of gaining weight when not active.
I was recently reading an article about the Baltimore Ravens when they came into training camp this season. The article was focusing on how many of the players came into camp overweight and out of playing shape. I really don't think it needs to be said, but just like boxers, does it really matter how they come into camp. And the only thing that truly matters should be the end result? And what kind of shape that they are in when they walk onto the field to play or climb through the ropes to fight?
I also believe that the Klit brothers are different animals. And are on a different level as far as taking care of themselves and few athletes can be compared to them regardless of what sport they happen to play.
In closing I will say that if you truly believe that Byrd was chubby I wish I could stay that chubby. And I personally believe if you presented your case of chubby HW's before say Judge Judy with the evidence that you have presented, you would hear these words, case dismissed due to lack of evidence.
