I think that if a fighter can't make weight in a certain division, then he has no business fighting at that weight or competing for that title. If a catch weight is involved, then it should have one fighter going up and one going down. That way both fighters are making a sacrifice and the playing field is more even. I like Pacquiao but the whole "8 division" thing is a gimmick and should have an asterisk associated.Comment

WTF , going up is different than going down , the one going up gets stronger and the one going down gets weaker , how is that even ?I think that if a fighter can't make weight in a certain division, then he has no business fighting at that weight or competing for that title. You guys wanna talk about weight at least get an understanding on how it works !Comment

Dont compare these guys with what Manny does. These guys have 1 catchweight fight? Manny has had how many? And how many fights have fell off because he WANTED a catchweight?Catchweights are as old as boxing. They are what you do to make fights between bigger fighters and smaller fighters. Let's look at some of the "classless" boxers that have resorted to "catchweights" in fights:
Julio Cesar Chavez v. Pernell Whitaker--Chavez insisted on 145 and got it.
Sugar Ray Leonard v. Danny Lalonde--Leonard insisted on 167 for Lalonde's 175 lb belt (really?)
Roy Jones Jr. v. Tito Trinidad--Tito insisted on 170 lbs for this and got it.
Oscar De La Hoya v. Bernard Hopkins--158 lbs at De La Hoya's insistence
Henry Armstrong v. Lew Jenkins--140 (7 under the welterweight limit) at Jenkins' insistence.
Pac - Cotto
Pac - DLH (not really a catchweight but same principal, bigger fighter coming down/smaller fight coming up)
Pac - Mosley (originally wanted at 142 Mosley said kickrocks)
Pac - Marg
pac - Cotto 2 (Cotto says sucka bag of ****s)Comment

Good points hillbilly... Cotto is def still unproven at 154... He's not a devastating body puncher either anymore... But how good is Trout? Is he a real top 154 lber?In my opinion, Cotto hasn't fought any of the top 154 lb fighters. He's beaten: Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, and Floyd Mayweather.
Foreman is totally featherfisted and had a hurt knee. Mayorga has been shot for years. Margarito is shot and has never had any success at 154. Floyd isn't a 154 lber. Until Cotto gets in the ring against a real top 154 lber, I'll reserve judgment as to how effective he can be at this weight. I think Trout is going to hand Cotto his ass.Comment

Cotto didn't want to embarrase himself for doing the moonwalk for 6+ rounds again
The truth is that if the fight was made at 154, it would benifit Pac even more than at 150 cuz Cotto's speed would look like he was stuck in molasses compared to Pacs and speed killsComment

so, they were asking for the catch weight for cotto's benefit.
**** outta here.Comment

That's all true. He wanted to defend his tittle against Margarito at a top weight of 150. That is the same 150 they wanted for the Cotto -Pacquiao rematch. How can Cotto try to make a fight with Margarito at 150 and claim he will be weak at 150 for Pacquiao? It does not compute. Cotto is full of double talk. Pacquiao and Cotto were not champions so 150 was not a catchweight, just a compromise weight between two fighters that are not the same size. I believe Cotto when he said they did not offer him 13 million. Bradley got 5 million so I'm guessing they offered him 8 or 9 million. So "No Excuses" Miguel is now blaming the weight for his beatdown by Pacquaio, just like he blames the wraps for Margarito raping him. Not to mention he went off in a strop like a little girl after clearly losing to Mayweather.
He didn't seem to mind about going down in weight when he asked Margarito for a catchweight in their rematch...Comment
