McCall lost to Gomez which Vitali TKOed quite easily...

@Anorak Thanks for the English lecture I appreciate it! Very relevant to discussion indeed...
How were McCall and Rahman not better than Arreola? Or Solis? Rahman BEAT Sanders for goodness sake. They both have something Arreola and Solis lack: wins over legitimate contenders. Arreola's record against the top ten: 0-2. Number of top ten guys he's fought: 2. Solis's best win is Austin, and he struggled. Austin is bleh.

Oh, and they beat Lennox Lewis.

    GTFO.

Lennox all day. As a bonus, he faced a younger, much more prime Vitali on a day where he showed up in pretty bad shape, fell behind early, ripped Vitali's face open, and WON their fight.

Vitali didn't even beat a Ring rated top ten contender until like seven years into his career (Sanders). Vitali can't carry Lennox's jock.

That doesn't mean there weren't better guys. How did so many of his contemporaries from 1999-2003 (when he got Lennox) face so many tough guys and he didn't. A case can be made that Kohl sat on him too much but while he was fighting to take the easy road to a mandatory, guys like Tua, Rahman, Byrd, Ruiz (and a case can be made Ruiz beat better fighters than Vitali has) and his lil brother were fighting the best of the top ten and often each other. The only one he faced was Byrd who he was beating but being made to look awful doing it.
