This is how most people on this forum feel about him.. which is fine..
He was not over rated at all.. In fact, he was the most dominant champ in history... i really dont remember losing a round in his prime. Ive seen most of his fights..
He was truly something special.. Its really easy to sit here and say he was over rated and fought bums.. Fact of the matter is, in his prime, he was pretty much undefeated (griffin was a DQ). He beat a Prime Toney, and Hopkins no sweat..
He isnt even a former shell of himself. Hes just a journeyman who is content to fight for money..
Roy was truly great.. fastest hands ever p4p (meldrick taylor gives him a run for his money)
Hopkins won 4 rounds against him. Its a really good fight to watch for the history aspect of it. You can see that Hopkins will be a great when he was doing relatively well when everyone else was getting dropped and KTFO by Jones. Hopkins did best when he got Jones on the ropes, a weakness with Jones that came back years later in the first Tarver fight. Hopkins had problems landing on Jones enough overall because of the speed disparity, Jones was just too fast.
i started boxing in 2000 , and at that time he was THE pound for pound king.
He was in all the magazines.
he not only dominated he made boxing look like it was the easiest thing in the world.
The last fight where he still had it was the first tarver fight, Tarver was at his peak and very hungry but jones out speeded and outboxed Tarver.
But it was also the first time where he started to suddenly saty on the rops because he was gassing and tarver capatilized on it.
Before the second tarver fight at the weigh in jones now looked alot older and his body was visualy looking worn out.
I knew before the fight that he was going to loose soon because his style relaid on his speed and atletismen.
On of my favorit fights was the Woods fight , Woods was a big strong prime 28 age fully fledge unbeaten fighter, in that fight Roy was soo fast and powerfull that it was scary.

Yeah they both seemed to nullify each other and make a boring fight even when they were both old same thing. Look how good Hopkins looked in his next fight after the rematch. The two of them just make for a stinker with their defenses. Prime old whatever.
