Comments Thread For: Team Alvarado View Rios Win as Path To Bigger Fights

BoxingScene.com recently spoke to Shann Vilhauser who trains Mike Alvarado (33-0). The undefeated junior welterweight faces Brandon Rios (30-0) on October 13th in one of the year's most anticipate fights. This past April Rios struggled in a controversial split decision victory over Richard Abril. Rios struggled to getting down to the 135 pound lightweight limit and ended up weighing in at 137 pounds. Throughout much of the fight he had trouble getting past Abril's jab and was outboxed for long stretches of the fight.

Hopefully the winner gets Garcia or Matthysee. Preferably Lucas.

GBP already signed Cotto for Dec. 1st and the logical reason is a fight with Alvarez. The only reason they dont announce it is because they learned their lesson with Ortiz.

I doubt Rios or Alvarado will be fighting Garcia or Matthysse anytime soon. I would like to see the Rios-Alvarado winner fight Marquez, if Marquez doesn't get tied up with Pac this fall already. If not Marquez, I'd like to see the winner fight Judah/Peterson.

I can't wait for this fight! Their two styles are perfect for each other. I give Rios the edge because the new weight should help him. It's a shame that GBP pretty much holds the rest of the best at 140 unless Bradley wants to move back down. Other than that the winner will probably be built up and fed to Pac late next year.
