I think that would be the thinking for some, but the people who want to see Ward-Dawson watch a lot of fights anyways and boxing fans don't need a preview show for it. That leaves casual observer to be drawn in...and that's why it's worth asking if this is a fight where you really want to try to lure people into the tent.

Everytime I've seen 24/7 it has seemed to me like a boxing show for non-boxing fans, based around hype and play-acting for the cameras. I don't care about whether or not someone likes their dad or not, or if their wife is a nice person. I'm also not that fussed on seeing fighters give WWE-inspired speeches about how great a fighter they are or what they'll do to their opponent.
I'm not saying that it's never interesting, but it's a show designed for a certain type of fan.
These guys love their families and don't talk shit about them or threaten to attack them. They don't beat their wives, and you could sum it up by saying that they've fought several opponents who were superior trash talkers to them but inferior boxers. Nor have they gone in the opposite direction by playing up their 'down-to-earth regular guy' routine like Hatton did.
24/7 seems ideally suited to the sort of fan who spends hours arguing about Floyd and Manny but has probably not even looked at a Ward-Dawson thread. I'm not saying that those are the only people who watch 24/7, but I guess my feeling is that if you're someone who has spent more time watching 24/7 episodes than you have watching previous fights involving Dawson and Ward, then nothing anyone can say is going to change the kind of fan you are.
24/7 has never promoted a match-up based upon the skills and resume of two boxers. It has always focused more on what they do out of the ring, and I can't see any way that saying 'this is almost certainly going the distance and there probably won't be any knockdowns either, but these are two are the very best fighters in the world, each the clear ruler of their weight class and very skilled' will result in more attention for the fight, even though I wish it would.
Of course HBO should do whatever they can to promote boxing, but let's not expect significant results when a TV show that is all about style tries to sell a fight that is all about substance.Last edited by Clegg; 08-23-2012, 08:51 AM.Comment

He's also the most exciting fighter in boxing. He always puts on good fights. Who cares if he's boring outside the ring? he's genuine and doesn't act like someone he's not(Floyd Jr). People relate to him and along with his fighting style makes him one of the few fighters people pay to watch.Comment

from a fighters perspective, floyd and tim used the show expertly to reinvent themsleves. from a fans perspective, I think floyd/odh, floyd.hatton, or cotto/margs are really how the show should be used.
Although, i think floyd's act has been stale, and he won't show any sparring (which I can understand) so maybe he should be moved from the platform until he has something new.Comment

I always thought 24/7 added some depth. The description even tells you "An inside look on their journey before they step in the ring (date here)" It's made to make boxers look more human. We watch these fighters and only look at them objectively, judge and disparage. Unless you like them, then you praise and compliment.
Everyone knows that a boxer goes through hell to prepare for a fight. You can see it in their eyes, the definition of their muscles, the way they carry themselves into the ring fight night. 24/7 provides a background look at who they are and what they feel. What the journey means to them. How we as regular or not-so-involved-people can relate. Everyone has a story to tell.
It gives boxers a chance to catapult their names and themselves into a brighter light.
With that said...There needs to be a 24/7 for Donaire/Nishioka.Comment

Nothing will ever compare to the first one Oscar vs Mayweather IMO
Timothy Bradley was one of the most interesting on HBO 24/7 recentlyLast edited by KnockUTheFukOut; 08-23-2012, 10:35 AM.Comment

Solid article. Some very good observation in there. I loved the Mayweather/Hatton 24/7. By the time the fight arrived, I was absolutely chomping at the bit for action. Plus, I enjoyed the hell out of the fight.

Who cares? like the other poster said "he is the most exciting fighter in the sport" when you pay to watch Miguel Cotto you will get drama, action and everything that makes the sport of boxing so great. Cotto is the only PPV fighter in the sport that you get your moneys worth.Comment

24/7 is Mayweather's idea, then HBO and Mayweather Jr created it and its been successful ever since.Comment

Shiiit, Cotto is a decent fighter, but I wont go as far to say he's a great fighter to watch on PPV. Cotto Vs Margacheato 1, and 2, was boring fights to me.
The best skilled fighter to watch on PPV is Floyd Mayweather Jr, I only pay to see Mayweather Jr fight.
Cotto isn't that great of a fighter, so whenever he fights his fights tend to be competitive, so that goes over well with boxing fans.
Fans that ordered Pacquaio fights for a couple of years enjoyed watching fixed fights, if Pacquaio has to fight real competition, his fights wont be entertaining. For those that want to see Pacquaio beat up on weight drained/weight stipulated fighters, fighting at catch weights will get there moneys worth. For those who wants to see a fighter (Cotto) fighting on PPV involved in competitive fights, will also get there moneys worth, But if you want to see the best fighter in the world perform in the ring, then we pay to see Mayweather Jr, because you're paying to see Mayweather perform, so if the fights not competitive, and Mayweather is dominating offensively/defensively that is the quality you're paying to see.Comment
