Comments Thread For: Kaew Pongprayoon Leaves Boxing After Winning Silver

Sergeant Kaew Pongprayoon paid a visit to Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha yesterday and left with the promise that he would soon become Lieutenant Kaew Pongprayoon.

Sgt Kaew, of course, is Thailand's newest boxing hero, winning a silver medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games that most Thais strongly believe should have been gold.

‘‘I have to congratulate Sgt Kaew for bringing fame to Thailand,’’ Gen Prayuth said after meeting the 32-year-old light flyweight boxer from Kamphaeng Phet at the Royal Thai Army headquarters yesterday morning.

60k baht = just under 2k USD. While that might not sound like a lot to us, it probably is in Thailand...

Doubt 2k is that much there. I mean it's quite a tourist hot spot now, so I imagine salaries are higher than 20k a year for a soldier.

This other article has him making 20 million baht = 635k for this. I don't think there's one pro jr fly that makes half that in a year.

LONDON - For boxer Kaew Pongprayoon, life will go on without an Olympic gold medal. Following his 13-10 loss to China's Zou Shiming in the 49kg final on Saturday, he declared: "I was robbed." He said yesterday: "I can now get over it. I know that Thais have sympathy for me and think I was robbed. I'd like to tell them that this is part of sports. "I'd like to thank everyone who has given me support. I did my best. We can't change the result. We have to accept it.

I think that is prob the correct estimate. The Thai's have a history is giving large gifts to sporting people who bring glory to Thailand. Not the mention the King is crazy rich and can afford to give ****** amounts of money away
